Great show! Arlo & Abe kicked it off with a nice versions of "Chilling of the Evening" and "My Front Pages" with Arlo playing a Martin 12-string. Arlo then started to talk about stuff--any and everything--and got around to "Motorcycle Song", "Mooses Come Walking", the beautiful unnamed instrumental I think he wrote with Gabby Pahuini's (sp?) son...(Is it just me, or is Arlo a lot better on guitar than he was 10 years ago? I seem to recall him doing little more than strumming back then, and now he's playing some lead and more complex fingerpicking stuff....). After a break, there was a lot more--"I Can't Help Falling in Love with You", "Irene", a tribute to Dave Van Ronk (St. Louis Tickle), "When the Ship Comes In", "This Land is Your Land" (interrupted by a hilarious rap about why they sing that song in China..."What do they know about "From California to the New York Islands?"). Arlo came back for two encores, and played "Highway in the Wind" and "San Francico Bay Blues". A nice version of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out" was in there too, as was "St. James Infirmary." It was a great show...everybody loved Arlo and the feeling sure seemed mutual. Can't wait for the next one.

Arlo has always been an amazing guitar picker
you want to hear some fine pickin' -
have a listen to "little beggar man" from the "One Night" album - '79 i think
or hit up some of these traders on the rare tape registry for some live stuff
you might find some great pickin on "ground hog" from denver '84
or Arlo and David Bromberg going at it on "Black Mt. Rag" from '85
i don't have much from the '60s or '70s
but he was pickin to beat the devil then too
i wonder why no one ever takes me up on this stuff
maybe because i'm not the one with 200 shows
but it's there to be shared - all you have to do is ask

Can't say as I've caught him live a whole lot of times, or heard all his records, but Arlo's musicianship pretty much blows me away. Always has. Keyboards, strings, whatever. (Maybe he's just featured different instruments at different times?)The big treat for me was always how Pete Seeger would set him up, then stand back and let 'im rip ...

The one thing I forgot to mention is that I reserve the right to be completely wrong! It occured to me that MAYBE one of the reasons I didn't see Arlo do much picking in previous shows I've seen--('73, '79,'99)--is that most of the time he had a Band with him! D'oh!

Could that be the one Eric Clapton does so well? The one by Jimmy Cox maybe?
