Hey, it's kind of fun to have some controversy once in a while. I was only at Carnegie. Now that you mention it, Hank, I was kind of expecting more Woody songs, too. I did enjoy the show so much I didn't think too much about it, though. Some of us did realize that this would be a disappointment to those who assumed it would mainly be an Arlo show, as well as a delight to people who were just happy to see Pete there one more time and who enjoy some variety in our blundering.

As far as Arlo not playing with the Dillards, my guess is that it might be because there really isn't a whole lot of time to get ready for Carnegie. Arlo tours hard right up to Carnegie time. So might all the others, but I don't really know. They did the album a (ahem...) a long time ago. Five cents ago in postal years. Putting a set together for them all to play on might have just been hard to manage in the little time there is, so they went with a festival style format rather than a tightly themed show.

My emphasis added there... if you looked at the concert promotion, it was kinda' clear (to many people), that Arlo would definitely not be on the stage all by his lonesome! And with 'name' stars like Pete and the Dillards, there would be some time-sharing... and then the added (to my delight) time-sharing given to the Mammals, and to Sarah and Johnny... in fact MY only real disappointment was no Abe solo!!! Or how about Xavier, huh????
If you incorrectly ASS-umed an Arlo-only show, you only deceived yourself. If you found the show lacking in Arlo-centric music, well, that's a different sort of disappointment, that hopefully just has you coming back for more!
Me? I loved every damn minute of the show, cause it was just a great ol' party up there, scripted or not. The way Pete, or Arlo, or Abe, or any of the others would watch someone else performing, and be singin' along, or strummin' along, showed that THEY certainly were enjoying themselves... hard to get much more intimate with your audience than that!
I've seen arlo have some clunkers, and not every one of his albums is on my top of the list, but a real fan can forgive the crap and still find the real soul of the music (and the musician).

Maybe it was just the venue... I can't imagine finding myself in joisey the day after Thanksgiving, and feeling all that rosy! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/eek.gif" width=15 height=15>

sorry you couldn't get past the disappointment of not seeing a regular "arlo gig", but i have to agree with the folks who've already stated that you should have known it wouldn't be that with the lineup listed. i can't compare the two nights since i was only at the carnegie show, but that was incredible! as far as arlo putting profit ahead of fans...well, what larry said!

By now I should know better, but I'm always suprised by how a group can share the same event and come away with such disparate opinions. Was this the best Arlo concert I had ever seen? Honestly no. Would I have missed it? Not on your life! I did feel it was a bit misleading to play up the Woody's 90th angle and not present more of his material. But this is a minor complaint. Johnny, Sarah and The Mammals were right on, they just keep getting better from show to show. The Dillards, who I was not at all familiar with going in made a new convert, they were excellent. And anytime you can see Pete and Arlo share a stage you've got to go. What a joy to witness the interaction and genuine affection between them.

I was fortunate to attend both nights' performances. The first night was kind of a warm up session for Carnegie; not bad but certainly not the very best. Carnegie was just about impossible to put into words. After waiting three (or is it four?) years to see Pete and Arlo on the same stage. . . No words can describe it.
It would have been nice to hear Arlo play one with the Dilliards, but time just wasn't there. It would have been good to replace a few Mammals selections with Arlo and the Dilliards.
As for Arlo hanging around and signing autographs and talking with the folks, I have seen only one show of the 70 or so where he didn't take the opportunity, and that was up at Lincoln Center where the security ran all of us out (including Arlo) immediately after the show.
These were two GREAT shows. Thanks Arlo!
