Kj : Looks like I can dispose of the popular myth that 4:20 is a code cops use for heading out for a marijuana bust.. My old boss used to say (mid morning) manditory 4:20! needless to say, the day would sometimes drag on.....

From what I understand, things started to tighten up about the late 1700's or 1800...blame it on Beethoven.

yes the Baroque A is accepted as 415....Beethoven was deaf...what did he know...LOL! There really was no standard pitch till the mid 1800's (blame the tuning fork) and the 440 wasn't official till 1939.

There were several reasons for the change. Solo music was leaving the chapel and parlor for the grand hall, where more projection was needed. Just as the viol and the harpsicord were left behind for lack of power, the violin family and pianoforte were changed in various ways to increase their volume. The modern A gave the orchestra a "brighter" sound and more intensity. Even now the contemporary orchestra pushes it up to 443 to add brilliance, zest and pop! Blame it on Paganini, the first superstar.
