it was a great night at the Melody tent....Richie Havens opened for Arlo in this benefit for whales... it was very hot in the tent though outside had cooled down by concert time... there were two little fans(the electric kind) on the stage... really little... it must have been tough up there... but Arlo remarked that Okemah was the real challenge with heat...

nearly every seat was taken in the 2300 seat theater and the audience was wildly enthusiastic and responsive, even had some things to say to Arlo which he handled with his usual humor....
....thanks for the setlist, Kevin... though there clearly were alot of fans there it was the kind of audience that loved Arlo's more familiar songs and went crazy cheering after Alice's.. a standing Ovation...it was great to hear "In Times Like These," particularly as i'm addicted to the new CD;)...and "My Peace" which folks sang with enthusiasm...once again, Arlo... thanks!...

Richie Havens was pretty amazing... he even sang "Freedom" as his last song... and did his little jump at the end....

Just wondering... Did Richie sing "Woodstock"? I LOVE his version!

Ritchie's woodstock was awesome ! He broke a string in Freedom and kept on playing, retuned his guitar alternately and finished the song with five strings. He told some really funny stories too.....it was a great pair up with Arlo. Those little fans seemed absurd I can't imagine they did anything. As KJ said they crowd was pumped. I would have prefered some more obscure Arlo tunes but the hits were fine.....especially the original version of the motorcycle song, which really rocked, and of course Alice's , which was very spirited. It's funny I was talking to "Fred" at the RSR table before the show and she was saying with the "solo" format we would not know what to expect and he wasn't doing so many "greatest hits" type sets. Curve ball supreme. The highlight of the show for me was the chance to actually "meet" Arlo for about 5 seconds. As many know he sometimes hangs out to sign autographs , etc. Fred said probably not at this show due to the crowd, etc. Ritchie came out after his set to do autographs and was immediately swarmed. Anyhow I had this old musicology song book "Songs of Work and Freedom" with many entries about Woody and others from Arlo's repetoire which I found somewhere years ago and thought I would pass along to Arlo as a birthday gift. Fred was happy to do this for me, but as Ritchie began to play(watchtower) Arlo was hanging out listening outside the performers area. No one seemed to notice him standing there. I brought him the book, offered birthday greetings, he said "thank you very much !", seemed genuinely appreciative and went back in the dressing room. It was a moment it time for the only guy in Southborough, MA with an Arlo Guthrie bumper sticker on his car.

yup,Wyld, as Kevin said, he played it and it is the very best version....

my only wish for the night .... to hear and see Arlo and Richie together...

they are doing Bethel for the 38th anniversary next week...i wonder...

Sounds like a great ime. I'd love to see them both sing together too. SUnday could be their chance. Now I know what to expect Sunday.

Orkney Springs was a great show & a full crowd. I'll have to give more pics & info later. I won't get to post a set list until probably Wed due to being busy traveling etc. It was nice seeing Sue, Arlo, Fred, Moe & Killer again. Hope Sue made it home okay. Sunday here we come! With Arlo it is an adventure...

Hey Kevin, don't feel bad, I've got the only one here in Ayer too Maybe I should come to Southboro, we can park both cars out side the local diner, (been awhile, is McArthy's still there?) with our 2 Arlo Guthrie bumper stickers..and maybe some other nearby Blunderites can join us...and can you imagine 50 Blunderites with Arlo Guthrie bumper stickers cruisin' thru town...well friends they may think it's a movement..... oops, sorry, got carried away

Thanks Rosie ! I proudly drive about with my Arlo bumper sticker and blast tunes out the window on the way to, what else.......the town dump ! I'm the local Arlo mobile ! I think I'm gettin carried away.......been thinkin about tradin the jeep for...........a VW microbus. Yes Mcarthy's is there....now Mauro's but still the same. We could easily park there and sing a chorus of Alice's restaurant.(better yet I'll take a bed sheet and make a sign,...climb on top of Mauro's and change the name to Alice's Resturant...then we sing...we will all be in the newspaper story about it)....the cops in town have mountains of unused cop equipment and need something to do. No matter if they cart us off to Westborough State Hospital as kooks...I have the keys !!

Greetings from Woodstcok. No not that Woodstock but the one in VA. Tomorrow we head off to Wolftrap park to see Arlo! Today I was listening to a station on the radio here playing bluegrass music & the dj on there said he was Arlo last nit4e in Orkeny Springs & hung around with him. He said Arlo was 62. Not he's not lol. He sadi Arlo told him he'd been working for about 60 yrs & he said he'd been working for about 50 yrs. The dj sred heaid that he'd figured he'd be working themphony omn next 40 yrs. & Last nite I was flipping dials on the radio & heard Arlo's version of "Can't Help Falling In Love With You' that he does with the Symphony on the radio. Pretty cool!

We had a nice tiome staying at the Episcopal Retreat at Orkney Springs last nite. Guess who we met today! One of the Blind Boys of Alabama. They were supposed to a a show at Orkney Springs where Arlo was at. We didn't get to go cuz it'd been too much trouble to go over all those mountains to get to Woodstock late at nite & could afford the Episcopal Retreat 2 nites in a row. Anyway this Blind Boy of Alabama Bobby was so inspirational. He walked & got around better than I do despite being totally blind & also diabetic. I'm sure the folks tonite there are having s great time...

Thanks for the updates from the road...keep 'em coming. I would be there (love Virginia..have relatives all over..and went to Shenandoah Conservatory...didn't flunk out...but almost got kicked out for an "illegal something or other" conspiracy...it was'nt really mine (yeah right Kid !!)...though I can not tell a lie, it was the roomates)...but time off was not possible. Many folks in my family have diabetes, the wife since she was 2. She's a living miracle (so her endochronologist says) to still be sorta healthy, etc. @ 43. Though her blood sugar was 35 last night, glad it didn't happen on Wed. when I was not home and at Arlo. Life's a tight rope walk as you know. Hey thanks again and look forward to the set lists. I was so impressed with Arlo's solo togetherness (the sound of that Martin guitar in his skilled hands was amazing,....at first I thought he might be playing to a track of Gordon or Abe...but no..it was all him...outstanding)...It would be something to release a recording or DVD of the the tour. I have highly encouraged my relatives in northern VA to attend Wolf Trap.

It was interesting just getting to Orkney Springs...Google maps sent me on a 45-minute tour of little country roads for the last 20 miles. It took me 2 1/2 hours to get there...and it was only 106 miles from here. Go figure. When I arrived at 5:30, my blood sugar had dipped to about 60, but I had made dinner reservations at the Retreat, and they were ringing the dinner bell when I was walking up the driveway. I was back to normal within an hour. It was simple fare, but decent and exactly what I needed.
The concert was great! The set list was pretty much what he did in MA a couple of days earlier, but with the addition of St. Louis Tickle and This Land, and the story of Joseph and his coat. It was a wonderful show, and I totally enjoyed it. It was also great seeing everyone.
I followed the bus back to 81 on the way home (thanks, Killer!) and I was home in 1 1/2 hours. No rush hour traffic and a different route on the little country roads made the difference. I felt safer, too...on the way in, I had the Deliverance theme music going through my head.
I'm looking forward to the Wolf Trap show. Jim is going with me for this one.
Wolf Trap is close by...15 minutes from the house! Since it's an open air venue, I'm glad that the weather has cooled off...it was 103 on Wednesday, and I think it was a balmy 85 today. The Filene Center is covered, but open on three sides...so the temperature makes a difference to the performers.I don't know who played Wolf Trap on Wednesday, but it must have sucked for musicians big time...it also rained, and the humidity was about 99%.
I'll post set lists when I get around to editing the mini disc files.
