Had a great time tonight in the sweltering auditorium of Huterdon Central High school. Later, I watched my 17 year old daughter ask Arlo if he would mind having his picture taken with a cyclops action figure(she has been taking pictures of various people with cyclops for weeks now - I am not sure why, but it is very entertaining). Arlo obliged. I just kinda watched and grinned thinking about how when I was 17 in 1968 I was madly in love with Arlo. The show was great . Thanks to Arlo and family for a wonderful night.

Show Report Commentary:
Seeing as how it had been raining for several hours in the morning, and the weather reports were calling for "severe storms" all afternoon and evening, the Park Service made the very wise (albeit wrong) decision to move the show to the local high school. But it was sunny, hot, humid and the AC hadn't been on all summer, so even though they did turn it on around 3 PM, you'd never know it.

Now remember, had this concert happened in the park, those of us who arrived early (showtime 7, arrival time 3) would have been entertained by the sound check/rehearsal. Unfortunately, these being times of high security all over this country, the mere thought of a bunch of aged hippies brought out every security guard and police officer the county had. Every door to the school had someone stationed in front of it, some doors had several people. They were very entertaining, too!

Arlo arrived after having toured the county looking for the right high school. After their equipment was moved into the auditorium, Arlo came out and sat with us. There were a few photo ops, but mostly just hanging out.

Beryl and Howie (a couple I've seen at many local Arlo shows) and I have been in contact over the past few months and they met me at the show. Beryl is a "lurker" on these boards, but maybe this post and last night's show will lure her into introducing herself to the rest of you. Larry arrived a little earlier than I, and had helped bring in some equipment, which enabled him to save the entire first row (center) for us Blunderites.

People began lining up around 5. Doors were supposed to "open" at 6. The doors, however, had to be open the entire time as it was stifling inside. So security made sure we didn't try to sneak in early. They were "tough" too! Laughing and joking with us. We had to offer collateral just to go inside to the bathrooms.

John and Regina were there and Reg told the guard how Arlo's shows really are a chance for all of us to get together, that Arlo's merely the catalyst. There were other people there I recognized from The Church and other local shows but can't remember their names (I am SO sorry, I'm really bad at names).

Finally, at 6:30 they began letting us in. Since we had saved seats we weren't all that concerned, but the line was extremely long and in the end, not everyone was able to get in. They had all the doors and windows open in the auditorium but it was so hot and humid! They asked us all to take our seats to do a "head count" of empty seats so they could allow more people in.... finally they set up speakers outside for those who couldn't get in and they tried to set up a screen also, but I heard that it didn't work (that may be wrong, just what I heard as I was leaving). At one point, I saw some folks entering a classroom and playing with the TV, but eventually they gave up there too. The auditorium holds close to 1,000 so it really was a festive, crowded night, a great showing for Arlo and family.

The staff did a wonderful job last night trying to deal with the situation. Had it rained, of course, all of this would have been justified (just can't trust those weather people, can ya?).

Sarah was on stage 'sans Johnny" as she put it earlier. Oh, the AC on the bus isn't working yet, so it was a really hot day/night for the family. Olivia was running around (she's just so adorable) outside when they first arrived.

Pickin'.... which according to one source is called Black Mountain Rag???

I had a chance after the show to ask Sarah Lee what the new unknown song was. She told me it was called "Mornings(or Mournings) Over", and it will be on the next Sarah Lee and Johnny CD due out soon. As it was the first time hearing this song, and memory being what it is these days, I don't recall the lyrics to well, and thus don't know if it's "Morning "or "Mourning". I do remember that Sarah did a great job singing it in a soulful bluesy fashion.

As a side note, I was able to eat one of Terrie's brownies and still make the one hour drive home after the show.

Well, Larry.... IF you can make it down to OC on Monday, you'll get to hear it again. I know getting that's not likely... but....

Glad you were able to see straight after eating the brownies. I had a 2-hour drive ahead of me, so I saved a few to eat when I got home.

I am not quite sure how I can post a picture ( the afore mentioned Arlo with Cyclops photo) here...can someone give me a hint or two?

That show sounds like his Mt Vernon, OH show in 92 except the security wasn't bad. We couldn't get in early to see the soundcheck either. We planned our annual 2 weeks trip to see Mikes sister in Ohio around it. We took her & our niece with us & had a ball. The folks running the thing moved the show to an indoor auditorium there from outside cuz it had rained earlier. It didn't rain that nite. They had to do speakers outside thing cuz so many had showed up & this was a free show too. We had seats in first or 2nd row. Ah memories. Thanks for sharing your show story...

Myself and 5 others travelled from Toms River area to Flemington last evening. Unfortunately because of the construction on Rt. 31 we didn't go to the HS first, esp since the sky was clear. But when we got to the park we found the concert had been moved. We went back down 31 and got to the concert only to find that they were full to the brim! Boo Hoo! So we went for ice cream and listened to Arlo on CD for the ride home. Happy to see that there are a few other relatively local venues that we can try for!:(

Welcom Ruth! I REALLY want to see the pic that ya posted, & I tried & tried ughin,, with no luck, even went to FAQ, but still didnt get the pic! I guess I just cant figure it out It sounds very interesting for sure! & I'll keep a tryin'. Sorry ya'll were so hot last night! But glad ya'll stuck it out! I know Arlo & family do so very well, no matter the temp! When they're in Okemah each year, its purdy hot indeed, & it doesnt affect any of thier performances... ALWAYS ALWAYS GREAT!! Terrie I REALLY GOTTA/WANNA try those Brownies! Yum Ya'll get some good rest & take care!

I was at the Hunterdon show last nite and i loved it..i had such a great time my first Arlo Guthrie concert.
...Arlo was kind enough to autograph the Mooses book i had gotten for my nephew (also named Arlo) and put in happy birthday...i don't think at 4 my nephew will appreciate the signiture, but my brother and his wife will get a kick out of it...
I enjoyed the show very much and I have to say they are great troopers performing in the heat like that....
I can't wait to go to another Guthrie family show. Maybe we can make it to the Yale Bowl for the Folk Festival...then I can bring my nephew to meet his namesake.

They'll be in Ocean City on Monday night!
