OH! MY! GOD!
Bluegrass, Blues and Arlo's songs all wrapped into one concert! It was one of those magical nights where everything was fresh and spontaneous and FUN! It looked and sounded like all the musicians were having a really good time. It started with Bromberg and three ladies (Angel Band) with some fine and fabulous three part harmony singing, then some bluegrass, blues, some Arlo, some really fine fiddling, and fabulous playing by Bromberg's band, Abe and Gordon.
I didn't keep a setlist. I didn't bring a camera or recording device. It was a wonderful, memorable evening of music that is in my memories as one of the finest concerts I've ever been to. My ears are still smiling!

sounds great sue! Really wished I could have been to this show, since after arlo, david b. is one of my long time favorites. I still have precious memories of seein' him and his band sweep into a small bar in Marin county and just blow us all away for a few hours of bluegrass and blues!

I had plans of taping the show, but I don't know what Arlo's taping policy is (there are digital soundboards of Bromberg's show w/ the Radiators, fyi...) and I was really really hoping someone else might be taping. Didn't see anyone there though. So I guess I'll just be another person here begging for a copy !
This is my first post here, btw ; I've just discovered this board. Anyways, I had a great time at the Arlo/Bromberg show - I've seen Bromberg & Arlo separately on numerous occasions, and this was definitely unlike any Arlo show I've ever seen . It has actually been much more than a decade since I've seen Arlo live though. First saw him at the Tower in the PHilly area in '86 , and I also saw him w/ Pete Seeger at Valley Forge (with the spinning stage) and at a crafts fair in MD - which actually WAS just a half a mile from the railroad tracks, and he DID do Alice's Restaurant ('87, I think)
So here are my recollections of the Arlo/Bromberg show - set 1 -Bromberg comes out with just his group, doin' some bluegrass, and with the Angel Band (3 women incl. wife Sharon) on lead vocals for several songs. Among other songs, Bromberg did his sarcastic (to the max) crowd-pleaser "I'll Take You Back " (When cows fly, when Bush balances the budget, etc...) . Bromberg's got a bass player, banjo, and fiddler. Arlo comes out and unobtrusively joins the jam on acoustic guitar. I never knew that Arlo could play leads, but he sure added some tasty blues licks to Bromberg's material, and they basically took turns trading songs and backing each other. They went a little more electric with "Coming Into Los Angeles" with some nice solos from Bromberg. Arlo told his story about Coming Into LA before hand, of course. Bromberg later told a story (which he might've made up, I dunno) about he and Arlo playing on a bill with Dave Mason decades ago, and Mason coming up to Bromberg during Arlo's set and asking something like 'do ya think if we find the right song, we could get up there with Arlo and...talk along with him ? '
Arlo and Bromberg did some old folk-blues covers, including Arlo singing on "St. James Infirmary" and Bromberg told a story about Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee - how no one really liked Sonny Terry (personality wise) -something about someone asked Brownie McGee about what it was like traveling with him, and McGee said "Are you kiddin' ? I wouldn't get in a car with that guy ! " Arlo had no comment...
Set 2 began with just Arlo and his players (Abe on keys and the pedal steel player) . He opened with "Highway In the Wind" which I always seem to mistake for "Chilling Of the Evening" - I guess they are pretty similar though. Then there was "When A Soldier Comes Home" which I wasn't familiar with, but Arlo told us the title. He got on a piano (I guess grand piano, next to Abe playing electric keys) and did a couple of tunes, including one by Dave Van Ronk. Then, still on piano, Arlo invited Bromberg & company to join him for his rendition of "City of New Orleans." Bromberg led and sang a nice "Dark Hollow " (gotta love that one, I'm a Deadhead...) and Arlo sang lead on "Me & Bobby McGee." Calls for "Clamzo" were frowned upon. Bromberg had already done a tune when Arlo looked like he couldn't think of what he wanted to do next, so he asked Bromberg to do more. He obliged with a very electric "Who Do You Love ? " Arlo did a new song, I think called "My Old Friend" or something - very good, and it reminded Bromberg that he'd just written a song (for the first time in a decade or 2, apparently) , which had a similar feel. Kinda. It was more of a blues, along the lines of "I'll Take You Back," only this time Bromberg really WILL take her back...I went with my sister, who enjoyed the show immensely, and they closed the set with "Good Night Irene" (which was the name of a child my sister lost in stillbirth, so it was kind of melancholy...) . The encore was an instrumental, which I'm guessing was "Nashville Pickin'" but I'm not really sure. My favorite (one of the few ) Arlo bootlegs I think has this song - Halloween '77 in Philly - an AMAZING show that I would love to get a copy of again, because my cassette at this point has way too much hiss to listen to it...

Sneakerface, that was an AMAZING show report; now I wish I had been there. Then again, after re-reading it, I WAS there.... right at my computer.

I really enjoyed this show. It was the meeting of two great minds and musicians. Hopefully they can share the stage together again soon. I was surprised that they didn't do some of the songs associated with each of them (Stealin', Key To The Highway, etc) and that the Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Mississippi John Hurt catalogs were not visited. Also, two one hour sets seemed short considering the ticket price and the amount of people that traveled for the show, but I enjoyed everything they tossed our way, and was overjoyed that they each shared a brand new tune.

I already sent my review in to Relix Magazine, and it will appear in a future issue.

Glad someone enjoyed it as much as we did... By the way tho, the first set was over an hour and a half, the second set was a little over an hour. It was a long evening for us considering an almost half hour intermission as people took their time returning to their seats .

Terrie, Wilmington was the only Arlo show I was to see this tour (though I was tempted by the psychologists' convention, being in the mental health field myself...)

half hour intermission ??!! What show were you at ? My memory was that it was supposed to be a 20 minute intermission that was cut short (to about 10 minutes) suddenly when they wanted to clear the lobby area for some kind of medical emergency . Anyone else remember this ? Was I dreaming ? Or... ?

Yeah it was close to 30 minutes... maybe 20 - 25. Usually we try to get back to playing after a 15 minute break but we were standing backstage waiting to get back to playing for at least an extra 10 minutes. We weren't aware of anything going on until afterward. We were really happy to get to do such a loosely formatted show too. At any rate however long the break was or wasn't it was definately one of the longer evenings of the tour. We did get a multitrack tape of the event so we know how long it was.

WOW!!! The more I read of this concert, the sadder I become having to miss it! Hey Arlo ... any chance at getting David Bromberg to the Church?? That would be GREAT!! Can't wait until next weekend .. see you at the Church and also at the walk! (I'll be the one scooping ice cream at mile 4!!) Come on by for a dip ...

Sneaker, sorry you couldn't meet us at the H'burg show. Cyndy, I feel as you do about the Wilmington show... I'm kicking myself for having decided against it months ago.

Arlo, I was so glad to finally see you last night... after an extremely long 6-month drought, I got my fix! Can't wait for the HD weekend... I'll post a Harrisburg setlist tomorrow.
