Its been a few years since I have seen Arlo. It will be a busy weekend for me. right after the show I head to South Glens Falls NY for a Powwow run by some friends of mine, back home monday, wednesday night heading out to Danville, Illinois for a big National Powwow and than home the following monday.

Does Arlo sign anything at the church shows? Im not a dealer, I just like to have things signed so eventually when I get a home I can have my Arlo room. My wife got me a little cedar box with the greatest hits cover printed on the lit and a sticker inside. Have no idea where it came from. I also have the old newsweek with Arlo on the cover coming soon in the mail.

Should I bring any of my morristown, nj or englewood nj copies with me?

I have one of those cedar boxes. I bought it off of E-bay a few yrs ago. I think it was put out to record stores to promote the album. He'll have fun signing it I'm sure. Have fun at the show & the pow-wow. We went to one in Charles City County in Apr or May out of curiosity & ti was fun. We plan to go back to the nexy one...

I may be coming down to Mount Jackson VA for a powwow this weekend. Gonna meet some friends from Ohio who are singing there.

I keep forgetting to check the Powwow schedule for Rankokus, NJ... have you been to that one? I took my kids when they were much younger (no way would they go now) and I loved it. It's just outside Burlington. BTW, I'm an anthropologist and noted you have an interest in Indians.

I try to keep up with the Native American pow wows in the area, but miss more than I catch. I'm also interested in native cultures. I studied Southwestern anthro but cannot claim to be an anthropologist; no Ph.D., and never had a job in the field. I've been involved in the annual BSA/GSUSA Native American seminar for the last 5 or so years, and I'd like to stay as informed as I can on other gatherings. Maybe we can do a thread in the "Fan Base" area. Thanks for the info on the national pow wow in Danville.

What is the annual BSA/GSUSA Scouting seminar and how does it relate to the Indian Powwows across the country? Other than the annual Roundtable Powwows?

Is that the seminar in North Carolina? I.m good friends with a bunch of the guys teach at it. I was supposed to come down with my drum to sing but couldnt.

A powwow is basically a gathering of Indians, Native American, American Indians(depends on whose company you are in) where there is singing and dancing for competition or just for fun. There is more to them, but that is the basic definition.

Powwows are pretty much in every state now, some are legit, some are just wackos pretending to be indians. Its a LOOOOONG story.

Yeah, right! As Vine DeLoria would say... (paraphrasing a bit)... Indians are the most cursed of all people... Indians have anthropologists.

Terrie; I must have edited while you were quoting. It's an annual BSA/GSUSA Native American seminar (it's a conference, really); it's hosted by a different tribe/nation each year and held on a college campus near that group's home. Its kind of a national Scouting-based pow wow for (and mostly run by) the kids (teens, mostly) and the emphasis is on sharing their cultures.

Oh, yah, many do "love" anthros, and with good reason. (How would I like it if somebody dug up my grandmother's grave and stuck her in a basement in D.C. and denied me access? etc., etc. )

Yep, and of course, the annual summer influx of camera-bearing anthro students, profs, etc. And many don't know not to photograph without asking first, and tipping after.

As for the human remains and grave-goods, that's why I want to do repatriation within the field of forensic anthropology. I'm not a cultural anthropologist by a long-shot. But since we need human skeletons for teaching/learning purposes (who's going to finish the repatriation that we began?), we still need the next generation of students to have access... which is why I'm a proponent of "The Body Farm" where we can donate our bodies to forensic science, right on the "grounds" of The University of TN's anthropology department.

Sharing of cultures sounds terrific to me! Wish I'd known about it, not that there are many tribes here anymore... the Lenni Lenape groups were removed from these parts and those that remain in OK are not recognized (not for not trying however when Gov. Rendell brought forth his grand scheme of gambling revenues to support local public schools!) I think the word "gambling" brings them into the public awareness, but still did not give them federal recognition. The closest are the Powhattan groups, in Rankokus, NJ (Rancocas).

Now, to get back on topic: Church shows in July. Who else is going? We'll be there for the entire weekend, camping in Copake, NY. Trying to find a decent cookie recipe for cookie-cutter type cookies.... have old-fashioned steam engine cookie cutters I'd like to use in honor of Gordon's new CD called The Last Train and for CONO and all other train songs. I even just inherited a LOT of N-gauge trains and I might even bring an Illinois Central passenger car with me for Arlo to sign and use as a decoration for a train-cookie table! And, maybe even some moose-shaped cookies as well

Ill be the big guy with a beard and glasses. Probably be walking in late...so please dont everyone turn around and look when they hear the door open at 805pm!!!
