Arlo, Pete, Abe, and Gordon gave a wonderful show tonight. I'm going to need help on Abe's sister's name and her daughter who sang Where Have All The Flowers Gone. (...Nope, my mrs. was right, Pete was talking to Arlo, not Abe, see below...) Also, Pete did a song during which he was driving a wedge with a sledgehammer where a promiment lyric was One Of These Days apparently based on Didn't Know John and I'm ot sure what the title really is. Any titles I get wrong, please help.

What an amazing show! When we had purchased our tickets we were advised that although Pete was on the bill he may not perform much due to his advanced age. Well having seen Pete a few times, I knew better. I should have so much energy. Singing a song while swinging a sledge hammer and hitting that wedge dead on every time-wow! Nice job on the set list Kurt. One small correction Don't Say It Can't Be Done is titled Take It From Dr. King and was covered by Sarah Lee and Johnny on their Exploration cd. It also appears on Seeds, The Songs Of Pete Seeger Vol. 3. Some moments that stood out for me...

Pete complementing Arlo on Haleiwa Blues and saying "If your father was around, he'd be trying to make up words to it."

Pete leading the audience in a very slow Amazing Grace and telling the story of John Newton. (with small variations from Arlo's version)

Arlo followed Amazing Grace by speaking about other forms of slavery, child labor, emotional or spiritual slavery as a lead in to his new song In Times Like These.

Pete added a couple words to the end of each verse of She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain turning it into the "toot toot, hold back, hi babe!, yum yum, snore snore, scratch scratch song. Sometimes you just gotta be there!

After Dr. King, Pete looked toward Arlo and Abe and said he was going to ask your little sister to come out and help on the next song. We all thought hewas talking to Abe and some even called out Sarah's name, But it was Arlo's sister Nora and her daughter Anna who joined Pete in singing Where Have All The Flowers Gone.

Pete spent some time talking about Ft. Benning GA and the upcoming annual protest against The School Of The America'a there. He told anyone interested to leave there name and address at the Clearwater table and he would drop them a note with info.

As always when Arlo and Pete get together it is a joy to witness the obvious affection between them. Everyone on stage seemed to enjoy playing with and off each other. The concert lasted about three hours and nobody wanted to leave. Both Pete and Arlo spent time greeting fans after the show. When I thanked Pete for well, I guess being Pete, he thanked me for singing. A nice end to a night I'll always remember.

I woke up amazed by Pete. Yet again... Still... Everyone knows wood heats a fellow twice but there is a third possibility I know I had not considered. And to take a section of log with so many branches that it is near impossible to split and use it for a musical instrument... I guess that's why Pete conducts and we sing.

Great, wonderful, energizing, amazing -- there are NOT enough words to describe this show!! What an absolutely WONDERFUL show!! John had a very detailed account of the show -- so I won't repeat things. It was great to see the bond between Arlo and Pete! When I first bougt the tickets, I spoke to the woman at Riverpool and she advised me that Pete might not play much. BUT!!! Pete certainly didn't act like any 86 year old person I know -- HE WAS WONDERFUL and just being Pete!! I wanted to take pictures but to my disappointment, found that no one cleared the memory stick from last weeks show at the Church!! SO, I hope others took pictures. There were a lot of people recording the show. I was talking to one of the guys who told me that this would mist probably be a DVD!! One more thing that made me laugh! I heard a woman talking on her cell phone and she said "You won't believe it but it's Woody Guthrie Junior!" Thanks to Pete, Arlo,, Abe and Gordon for a magical evening that I will never forget!!

I must add a few additional remarks here. Wonderful and more wonderful. Last night Arlo, the usual lovely, able host, was deferential partner to the effercescent Pete, his old pal, and it was this synergy that was so precious to witness. Think Wolf Trap and the many venues they used to play together. Classic Pete and Arlo. This night amazingly had all the energy of those days, as if not a minute had gone by. 86-1/2 year old Pete was in great voice. No wobbling, and lots of lung power-- and he later proved it! The very first line of their traditional first tune "Midnight Special" brought it all back. Pete told engaging tales of Shakespeare and the writing of the 46th Psalm, John Newton and the writing of Amazing Grace, of how he came to write "Rainbow Race". He told of the horrors of the School of the Americas, and he advocated attending the upcoming protest in mid-November. His recall of names and dates was impeccable. At one point he handed out "gravity is just a theory" bumperstickers to anyone with relatives in Kansas (as per the recent headlines about the religious right challenging evolution theory in the classroom). And of course the highlight was him revealing a big log with a wedge in it. Wired with a remote mic, he stepped up to it, whacking it in further while singing a chain-gang style a tune about making a "rainbow round this world" (he used to do this to demonstrate such songs). That got one of many standing ovations. He then launched into "English is Cu-raazy" without a single gasp. As my husband said, "He pitched a shutout game." At one point after all this, Arlo remarked, "I can't think of anything to say." They traded songs based on keys and when they couldn't think of the next song for a moment Arlo asked Pete "What next?" When some people in the audience offered suggestions, Arlo turned to us and said " I wasn't asking YOU guys..." When they sang "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" I thought of Woody, Harold Leventhal, and all the ones who have gone before, and who are with us still. A note in the program, in Pete's tidy hand dedicated the evening "for Harold Leventhal and Joe Aronow [Beacon Sloop Club activist who just died] So long it's been great to know you --The Guthrie and Seeger families." And Arlo (did I mention Arlo?), enchanted us in his own right with all his best including Alice's. No one wanted the evening to end, I think. I do hope it was taped for an "Even More Together Again" CD. Precious Friends indeed. We have been blessed.

I was there with my mom and dad. What a fantastic concert! Pete's singing was the best I've heard in recent years. I was amazed at how many songs he sang.
It was great to see a full Arlo/Pete show...one that hasn't happened in many years. I was commenting to my mom that it was great to see Pete do a FULL show without the help of Tao and the Mammalks. I think they were originally scheduled to appear. As great as Tao and his group are...they seem to sometimes overshadow Pete, I think.
I noticed they were recording and filming it...hopefully it'll see the light of day soon. It was one for the ages.

P.S. Dpoes anytone else think that Arlo's new one "In Times Like These" sounds very reminiscant of Springsteen's "Nebraska"?

It is reported that Woody said of Pete, "He is the youngest man I ever knew." And that was back in the 40's!

Still basking in the glow of last nights performance Reg and I attended the Beacon Sloop Clubs Pumpkinfest today. Pete was there and he had'nt slowed down one bit from the night before. We got there in time to see Pete perform Take It From Dr. King, Where Have all The Flowers Gone and This Land Is Your Land backed by a steel band. Pete began his intro to This Land with " Here's a song written in 1940 by Arlo Guthrie's father..." Pete later led a sing-along of When The Saints Come Marching In. And in between Pete gave interviews, shouted encouragement to children doing the limbo, and just appeared to be having a great time dancing and singing along to the other performers. I got to speak to Pete and commented that I knew he loved steel bands but never thought I'd have an opportunity to see him perform with one and he reminded me he was one of the first to bring this form of music to the U.S. Just a wonderful, if blustery, day on the river with Pete and friends.

I should also mention this was Barley Beagles first Pete concert!

Butterball: I liked what you were saying. I think the same thing whenever I see Arlo and Pete on stage together. When Arlo is up there alone, or with others (any other) he is center stage (figuratively and physically) and obviously in absolute control (contrary to him swearing he's not). When he's on stage with Pete, he looks (to me) like a kid who is still a student of and/in total awe of Pete. Its beyond my words to describe how incredible it is.

- But you all shudda seen Pete do the "LIMBO" at Beacon on Sunday.
