I see by reading some of the posts (no time to read all the ones posted since I was last here!) that "Riding Down The Canyon" is on some of the set lists. Are there other songs from "Son of the Wind" that have been added?

This is one of my favorite tapes/CDs - I even got the CD autographed when I bought it at a free concert in Sebastian (FL). I don't think a lot of people paid it a lot of attention - but they should! Cowboys are an import part of American folklore, and cowboy songs therefore should be an important part our folksong heritage too. The different take on this, though, is that it also ranged to other countries where "cowboys" work... it's a wonderful set of music. An added plus is "Hard Work"... which I'd love to memorize, it'd be fun to be telling it to (my eventual) grandkids while sitting in the rocker next to my wife!

Not keeping track of setlist these days. But wanted to post, that hey man, your right about something. 'Son of the Wind' is a VERY special album.

I can remember once at an HD walk. when 'Dead or Alive' sure woke up the audience tho! (LOUD and sounding hardcore)One of my favorites is Buffaloe Gals. & I laugh at remembering cringing, everytime, the 5th grade music teacher, would play the organ to that song, with 30 kids all singing outta tune.

Buffalo Gals is one of my favorites besides Riding Down the Canyon. Arlo sings it with such a cute twangy voice, now ain't that "purdy" hint hint.....What a coincidence! I sang Buffalo Gals in music class in 5th grade too that was almost 30 years ago!.....Holy guacamole how time flies
My music teacher had a very unique style of playing the song on the piano almost boogie style and made me bop in my chair. That was one of my favorite songs in music class I would request it every time....Ahhhhh such memories....."Memories light the corners of my mind"...Errrr wrong forum for that song, silly

All this chat about Cowboy songs ( Son of the Wind ) had me thinking about one of Arlo's story's.

Don't know if you ever heard it dja? Obviously I could never tell it, as good as AG himself. But it's a great story, and incredibly funny.

If you've heard this allready dja, my apologies....

Parphrasing to the max. Arlo is playing some town, parts unknown, and some old dude recognizes him. The old dude feels compelled to tell Arlo that he loved that album, and even thanked him for recording it. Arlo has the satisfaction of knowing at that very moment, well at least somebody got it. ( loved and enjoyed that sort of music he himself so much cherishs )

So AG tells the old guy, hey were playing here in town tonight, would you like a ticket to the show? And theres this long pause, and the old guy replies. NOPE, I don't go to shows, in a determined sort of way.

I can see by reading my words, how I almost destroy this story. But it makes me laugh everytime I hear it.. Or think of it...

I always thought Woody's " East Texas Red " on the same wave lenght of some of the songs on Son of the Wind. ntm: I love Arlo's version of that song! Altho in all honesty I like Bobby Dylans version of " Pretty Boy Floyd" the best.

"Son of the Wind" is one of my favorites too, so is "Last of the Brooklyn Cowboys." The songs, actually a lot of folk songs, are a good way to learn history. As a history teacher in the making, I try to incorporate music in my lesson plans. My senior research project was based on "1913 Massacre." We can use music to personalize history for students and I've found that while they may roll their eyes at "old people's music" it does get their attention. If they can apply the song to something the they have learned, they appreciate the music more.
