I wish Arlo had made a more bold statement against the war. He did sing the "Afghanistan" song and implied the President should maybe think more about things.

Though, I think that Thanksgiving at Carnegie is like a rally of peaceniks and we deserve to sing out together for peace. It is a lonely time to be against war right now.

Also, I would have loved to hear "Alice's Restaurant" with words about current situation.

The orcehstra was okay. Inspiring moments with the Copland piece and some great Rag-Time and Blues with some Arlo songs.

Something about the orchestra being there limited the spontaneity and the sense of whimsy and freedom in the audience, I think, though. You really felt like you had to be more "quiet."

I think I would have preferred at least half a set with them off-stage and just ARlo and a guitar.

Also, the "kids" should have come out sooner. Arlo shines when surrounded by family and friends. The show a few years back with Pete Seeger was alot about what it is all about: Community, and family, the folk tradition and the inspiration to sing, sing, sing.

Nice moments. Nice speech about the good old days when we all sang--and really got everyone into "Good Night Irene."

Can't wait til next year....

Actually, it's highly unlikely you would have heard him speak against the current war. Back during the church shows in October, he indicated he was pretty much in support of the way Bush has handled things and of the US being at war.

I know I won't remember the exact words he used, but it was something to the effect of peace without justice not being worth having.

You might look back at the threads about the church shows - I think some of it may have been posted there.

Ok, took a look - and the stuff wasn't in the thread about the church shows, which means it probably got posted somewhere on the community sites, and good luck trying to find it there.

Anyone else who wants to help refresh my memory on this, feel free. His general attitude back in October seemed to be that while no one really wants war, sometimes circumstances make it necessary, and this is one of those times.

i know i can't quote him exactly either, kim...but my memory of his general attitude, at least in october, is the same as yours. paraphrased, he said something like..he didn't expect to be with any president, much less this one, but here he is. of course, that being said it doesn't mean that he hasn't changed his thoughts or opinions, or even exactly what his thoughts and opinions are. with all that's happened, it's certainly possible that arlo, just like anyone else, can have a mixed bag of feelings...and i don't know that he has expressed any bold statements either way...just a few comments.

just want to add that i thought the concert was wonderful. every year i say i'm going to skip carnegie because the trip is a costly one, and this year was no different...but i always go anyway and once again, i'm glad i did! thanks, arlo!

i have been giving away homemade cookies at carnegie hall for a bunch of years now (the first time my husband saw me i was handing out cookies on the steps at carnegie!)..and i wasnt sure that this year anyone who didnt already 'know' me would be trusting enough to eat any. i made roughly 40 dozen cookies and almost all of them were gone before the show started! it's always fun to make folks smile and when they hear they are 'free' and i do it 'because it's carnegie!" they just sort of grin and get a 'happy face'...and it spreads! some folks still look at me sideways and dont want any cookies...but most folks come back for more..and now i'm getting 'i remember you from last year' and that is really fun. i just wanted to say thanks to anyone who had any (who didnt already know me) because it restores my faith in 'community' and togetherness...and proves that even in times of adversity..we can still take care of each other! i guess next year i'll have to make even more! (i met someone who didnt get any this year and we just cant have that!)

oh yeah..and the show was great too! LOL

Sherry, free cookies for the audience is a great idea, but I think it might be lots more fun to hand out free brownies to the symphony next time. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/wink.gif" width=15 height=15> I'm having fun just trying to imagine that!

The comment I remember at the Church Gigs (again paraphrasing) was "that the freedom we enjoy now, had to be fought for by someone in our past". - In essense it may now be our turn to fight for the freedom of the future. It really made me think.

The Carnegie gig was lovely. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks for everyone putting up with my non-voice and unusually quiet demeanor. It was great seeing everyone. Love you all. -REG
