Here's a definite "strange but true (maybe). Some weeks back, I read a Q & A medical column in one of the local area papers concerning getting a "charlie horse" in the calf muscle while sleeping. A bunch of readers wrote in that simply placing a bar of soap under the covers in the general vicinity of your lower legs would eliminate or lessen the nocturnal "charlie horse" problem. For some reason Dove and Dial were to be avoided. Too soft and oily maybe?

While we're on the subject of soap, if you stick a bar of soap in a microwave oven for a few minutes it'll puff up, sort of like those "snake" pellets we used to light on fire when we were kids. Ivory and gel soaps won't work (my nephews once experimented on their step-father's hotel soap collection....ummmm...I sort of helped). It also seems that the higher the fat content, the better the results. Irish Spring is cool. It winds up lookin' like "Gumby guano". Some words of caution: 1.) Put it on a microwaveable plate or bowl. It could get messy. 2.) It will be hot. 3.) Your microwave and the kitchen will smell like the soap for awhile (heating up a bowl or two of water will dispell it from the microwave) so pick a soap that you don't mind smellin'. Hey! It's good, clean fun!

so i have all these avocados, cuz it's cheaper to buy in bulk...but they're all green and hard as rocks...so i figure i'll put them in a brown paper bag to hasten ripening...an old trick i learned from somewhere...then i see on a tag, care and ripening tips...besides mentioning the brown bag thing (which you already know i already knew, they say to add a piece of fruit like an apple, banana, or a piece of citrus)

i love finding out this kind of stuff...it makes me wonder about so much...

i mean, maybe crystals really do have special powers too!

and the bag trick is cool, isn't it... put a couple of fruits in a paper bag with a green banana, and they all ripen up nice and quick.... Now, put a couple of blunderites in a paper bag, and they'll be lost for a looong time!

If you sleep on top of avocados, it does nothing for a charlie horse.

If you keep a bar of soap in a paper bag for a long time, you end up with a bar of soap that smells like a paper bag.

See! I wasn't making it up! It was actually in a syndicated newspaper column, "Ask Dr. Gott". I think you can find it online, along with other "Strange but true.....maybe" remedies, like Vicks Vaporub to treat nail fungus! Don't know if that works, but you wind up smelling like a cough drop for a year or more if you follow the treatment!

Curiously, "Gott" translates from German as "god"! Dr. God? Sheesh! A little ego there, or what?

Yeah, Dr Gott is in one of our local papers here. Maybe the Petersburg one. Didn't realize anyone else got him. My mom reads him. I read him sometimes when I can get ahold of the paper. We don't subscribe to anything but the Sunday Richmond Times Dispatch. We get that one for the coupons & Mikes sports section. If we could afford we'd get the weekday paper...

Science reported this week that after mapping the genomes of chimps and humans, we share 96% of our dna with chimps. President Bush participated in the study by donating some of his dna, and it was found that his dna matched 99.99% to that of chimps.

You're making a lot of chimps angry to hear this, Larry.

I know Mikey, and I extend my apologies to our cousins in the primate world. Bush also shared a lot of dna with snakes,weasels, ostriches and the common jackass by the way.
