i saw a van drive by the other day with tags that said "yo yo man"... i made a joke about it being tommy smothers...but now i'm thinking, hmmmm....

my thinkig is that the group "and many more" or their back up grup "and many many more" are perhaps the best entertanment anywhere.

They're actually a successor group to the old Latin group "et. al."

Some years ago, a friend of mine was part of the road crew for Merl Haggard and happened to be at a bar one night (I don't recall what town) where a lot of celebrity musicians were hanging out. He saw Tommy Smothers there and yelled, "Hey! Yo-yo Man!" Tom was all excited that somebody actually addressed him as "Yo-yo Man" rather than one of the Smothers Brothers and spent a good deal of time discussing yo-yos and such with my friend. I thought that it was pretty cool that, as famous as he is, Tom was still impressed to be recognized as The Yo-yo Man and not so full of himself that he couldn't find time to just "shoot the bull" with a complete stranger.

I met Guy Clark at an after the Hartland Folk Festival party once (sadly, the festivals came to an end some years ago). We were both pretty much "three sheets to the wind" and were talking about guitars. Well, at least I think we were talkin' about guitars! A little fuzzy on the recollection. Anyhow, he was talking about how he had this guitar custom made with an L.L. Baggs pickup and the same string spacing from the nut down to the bridge and then stopped right in the middle of his description and said, "Hang on! I'll go get it!" He came back a minute later and handed me his guitar! And here I am, a perfect stranger who's leaning against a kitchen counter to keep from falling on my drunken butt!

I reckon that, busy as they are, some performers and celebrities don't have a lot of free time. Some treat you like you're invisible or a piece of furniture. But it's awful nice to run into the ones who are down to earth and truly interested in meeting people, isn't it?

LOL...I'm getting the feeling that I predate a lot of people, Bobbi. Although I strayed from here for a while, I didn't think I was gone so long that soooo much would have changed. Arlo used to visit here back then, but I haven't seen him since I've returned. Things have changed.

I could have sworn he was officially affiliated with Duncan... or, rather, with the company that bought the Duncan name in '68 after they went bankrupt in '65 (they lost the trademark on the name 'yo-yo' earlier that year, the which I learned from a different site.).
