It happened this week. It happens every now & then. I always know how it's gonna play out.

Somebody will be at the door. One of the kids will answer & say, "Dad, [<u>insert neighbor's name here</u>] wants to see you!"

Neighbors visit each other to chat & socialize only on 1960's TV sitcoms. In real life in 2004, neighbors only come around when they want something. "Tell her to go away!" I'll say, loud enough for the neighbor to hear, sorta accidentally-on-purpose. "I'm watching the ball game!"

The neighbor will let herself in, laughing. "HAHAHAHA! You're always making jokes!"

Now I hafta invite her to sit down & we make some small talk. Then she gets to the reason for the visit.

"I hear you're a lawyer."

Before she launches into a long, detailed explanation of her legal problem, I'll say, "But I don't practice."

"What do you mean you don't practice?"

"I don't work for a law firm. I work for an accounting firm. I've never cashed a paycheck from a law firm in my life."

"But you went to law school," she'll say.

"That was over 20 years ago, & all we really did there was read a bunch of 12th century English cases about stolen oxen & stuff like that."

"Why do you work for an accounting firm? Why don't you work for a law firm & make a lot of money?"

"Too hard. Too much pressure. Too many long hours. Too many jerks to deal with," I'll reply, while thinking, if it's so great, why don't you become a lawyer? "In an accounting firm, I work hard for 3 months a year when the weather's rotten anyway. The other 9 months, nobody cares what I do, so I leave work early for the kids' baseball & soccer games, I take 2-hour lunches for the free outdoor concerts, I take days off for ball games."

Finally I'll give her the name of a lawyer friend of mine, somebody with reasonable rates, free initial consultations, wills written for under $100, stuff like that. She'll be back in a week complaining that he charges too much.

But for now, she'll tell the neighbors that the guy in the orange brick house, the one you always hear screaming at the Pirates game, is a nut, coz I don't subscribe to the Reaganesque ideal of working 12-hour days so I could buy myself a lot of stupid, useless crap & "feel good about myself."

Sometimes it's not easy being me.

Hey Joe, know what you mean.I got outta mega stress job (Aged Care, Dementia Unit) 4 years ago, went back to school and got a trade certificate in Horticulture. Got a job at a wholesale Plant Nursery propagating and looking after plants. I'm on the lowest pay you can get in the industry. Then I went back to college one night a week for two years and got a Diploma in Horticulture, just for me, cos I enjoyed studying. Now some people keep saying "Aren't you gonna use that Diploma!!! You could Triple you wage, are you crazy!!!" Well I don't think so. I drive a twenty year old LandCruiser and John drives a twenty year old Telstar but we own our house and don't owe anyone a cent so whose crazy!!! If people don't like me for who I am instead of what I drive or how big my house is then they're not the kinda people I wanna hang out with!! Life's too short!! Two of my faviourite sayings are; "Follow the Beat of your own Drum" and "You gotta make your own kinda music, sing your own special song, make your own kinda music, even if no one else sings alooooong!!"

Right on, Louise! One of my favorite sayings (I made this one up myself): I've never heard of anybody saying on their death bed, "I shoulda spent more time at the office!"

I don't really watch TV, cept for sports, & I don't watch all sports. Digital cable TV is yet another big scam, but I upgraded to it anyway so I could watch boxing, as HBO & Showtime are no longer available on regular cable around here.

On Sun., however, I discovered the Western Channel. I watched a 1939 Gene Autry movie, Blue Montana Skies, with his sidekick Smily Burnett. It was followed by The Gene Autry Show, a 1950 TV series, where his sidekick was Pat Buttram (Mr. Haney on Green Acres) & his horse was Champion. Gene Autry sang & beat the bad guys. No blood & gore. Lotsa outlaws got killed, but nobody got hurt.

Best thing I'd seen on TV (not counting sports) since The Byrds of Paradise. Maybe this digital thing ain't so bad after all.

i love to watch clint eastwood westerns...i don't even know which one is my favorite...i really couldn't give you an in depth analysis of any of them. i just love to watch them and find them comforting for some reason.

On my way back from my barber's today---altho' it's not really on the way back---I decided to stop into Jerry's Fine Used Records just to look around, not intending to buy anything.

In the "EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN" section---the mint condition LP's---there was a copy of Alice's Restaurant for only $4. The vinyl & the cover were both as good as new. I kept going back & looking at it & finally decided that, altho' I already had the album, I had to have this copy. It was in much better shape than the one I have.

Not a bad purchase, eh?

OK one happened to me Joe! Monday morning I got up for work (obviously after the Holiday Break) and turned on the tube to see how cold it was! Well, as if by a miracle Goin' South was on! I don't know if you like movies but Goin' South is like one of the Trinity of truly philosophical movies in the world. By, far Jack N. peaked with that one. I could quote a thousand lines of major philosopical value from this movie. There are only three movies of this truly cosmic import (in my mind). Some come close (A Touch of Evil with Charleton Heston as a Mexican social reformer was a great Joke by Orson Welles, Arlo jumping up and down (of course) and Dr Strangelove is certainly at the top of the second tier (you can't let a Russian in the War Room, he'll see the big board) but they are to specific in outlook for overall truly philosophical importance.
The others are Bull Durham and Oh Brother Where Art Thou (of course Christmas Story gets the Holiday nod for the second tier)!

Oh well, at least it was back to work with a smile and a positive outlook! Now lunch is over!

I do like movies (& Nicholson, too), PSB, but I don't get as much chance to go to 'em as much as I used to. My entertainment dollars go to baseball & basketball games, restaurants,& the occasional good concert or boxing match.

If you like Nicholson, you gotta read The Kid Stays in the Picture by Robert Evans, the former head of Paramount, just so you can read the chapter about Evans signing Jack to his 1st movie deal. I don't usually read Hollywood books coz I don't care anything about celebrities, but this is one of the best books I've ever read.

A bargain bin wonder. King Sunny Ade recordings made in Nigeria between 67 and 74 (most from around 74) including the entire original Synchro System. Lots of Ades vision of where Ju Ju Music can wonder with extra doses of Pedal Steel, Fender Guitars and Talking Drums. That bargain bin can be amazing I am glad I decided to browse the local Record (CD really does not work here) shop today.
