i came across a pete seeger song (well just the lyrics) called, "my dentist has tattooed legs". i tried to find a clip of it but couldn't. i am kind of curious about it though, i mean it almost seems like one of those secret society handshake type songs.

agnes, I was just thinking the other day (Monday?) about a somewhat related thing. How does someone find out about a song when the writer/artist never released it to the general public? More to the point - like tunes that Dylan wrote but never recorded himself, or Springsteen, or whomever.

I was just reading today that the Dylan tune Walkin' Down the Line was only done by him on a publisher's demo. Jackie DeShannon got a hold of it somehow - the song not the demo - and did it then someone else did it. I heard Arlo do it on a Soundstage program way back. I would assume Arlo heard Jackie's version or maybe not. I guess when you're "in the business" you hear stuff others don't song wise. Oops, ramblin' again...

I believe Arlo did Walking Down The Line at Woodstock & it was on some kinda of Woodstock record or video that was put out some yrs ago. I had a copy of it but am not sure if I still have it as stuff got lost when Mike passed on...

A question for anyone who cares to answer. Been thinking about odd stuff lately and it struck me that folks who like to dance seem to like to dance mostly to tunes they know as opposed to tunes that are danceable yet not familiar. Why do YOU think that is? There are no wrong answers on this one - at least I don't think there are.

I was drifting around in thought on the dance thing and went back to a wedding I did sound for. They also asked if I would provide the sound for the dance afterwards. I am not a DJ in the true sense of what those folks do - they are way more talented than I at that sort of thing.

I was given a laptop with a bunch of tunes on it and was allowed to throw in songs I thought might be nice also. I had some dance music that was being used in clubs over in Europe at the time so I threw one of those on in the middle of things - nothing. I also had One Thing Leads to Another by the Fixx - which I think is a good dance tune. Again, nothing. For a slow one I put up All La Glory by the Band - folks actually danced to that one. Anyway I thought the other two were good dance tunes, but they would have been unfamiliar to the crowd at the dance. I found it curious.

So agnes, if a tune gets you to a tappin' your toe you might be induced to get up and dance? Even if you were unfamiliar with the song? Cool! For me it seems that you - and folks similarly inclined - are listening TO the music and not FOR the music if that makes sense. I can see the predictability thing being a factor. And, indeed, when I was playing in bands back in the 60s we were doing mostly covers of Top 40 stuff and people danced to everything. It nudges my brain into thought for some reason.
