what other kinds of banes. are there? i wonder..... banes of existence, sure, but, could there be a bane, of something else? I dont remember hearing, of one..or would that be, of some...? Pam??, Ceashel??...... help, pls!!

I would like to make a Bumper Sticker that says,"Place Bumper Sticker Here!" on it!

That's an easy one, Bumper:

Etc. etc. etc.

Then of course, there's that bane of Thanes, the Lady Gruoch made famous by "The Scottish Play." You know the one I mean. Shakespeare wrote it.
That was Lady M.'s real historical name, by the way: Gruoch. Pretty gruesome moniker if you ask me. No wonder she became a bit of a psychopath. Sheesh.
Historically speaking, MacDuff was her son by her first marriage, and hubby number two went after MacDuff and his children so that they couldn't take the throne away from him -- since it was through her that his claim to the throne came in the first place.
I thought Shakespeare didn't make that altogether clear in the play, even if he did take as much poetic license with the story as he's supposed to have.
Nasty business that, killing off one's step-grandchildren, just so's your wife can be Queen instead of Queen Mum. And in the end he was killed by MacDuff anyway, who started a second family shortly after the first was wiped out, presumably, since he was succeeded by his sons.

Am I rambling on again? Oh dear.

Now perhaps you can tell me what kind of accent uses "bane" instead of "been", "da'" instead of "the" etc. I thought Boston, myself, but maybe that would be "barn", since in Bahstonian there are always "r's" where there are no "r's". as a proud alumnus of duh bronx high school of science, i can safely say that the citizens of that fair part of duh city have never bin ones to mince wurds, and the only bane they know is the one on BAINbridge ave.

now.. doncha' wonder WHY it is referred to as "THE BRONX" instead of just "BRONX"??
Does "THE" imply more than one?? if so, where are the others?? Is "BRONK" or "BRONCH" the original singular?? Why am I even spending time thinkin' about dis stuff????

I recall a billboard in Chicago a few years back cheering on "Da Bears".

However, in Michigan we stick "the." (Although "creek" is usually "crick" and "wash" is "warsh" and "sandwich" is "sammich" etc.).

And wolfbane (the bane of a werewolf's existence) was the only other bane I know, 'till I read the rest of these posts. (LOL, Muffy).

There is also fleabane - a plant that repels fleas... and baneberry (related to the buttercup) grows in forested areas from Georgia up into Manitoba....

Hey Arnie... didn't you pay attention in fourth grade social studies? Da Bronx was named for the family that owned all that land way back in Dutch colonial times... the land belonged to the Broncks... the spelling was changed by the English when they moved in.

but that also explains the "THE" in referring to da bronx... since it was a family name, and in going to see the family you would refer to it as "going to see THE BRONX"... and besides, EVERYONE had an aunt or uncle living on pelham parkway, so everyone was always visiting THE family!

of course in certain areas of Da Bronx.. you would be going to see the FAMILY... like around Southern Boulevard, with all the neat Italian restaurants!
