read on the net today about a young lady who worked and worked to buy herself her first car, she paid for her new limo, well heck she lives in England, I think it was a Vauall, anyway she went right home to show her parents, she parked ran inside and told her parents to come out and look, and there it was, her car, with a giant tree laying across it's middle.....the tree has fallen due to high winds...when asked what she was thinking, she replied, At least I was not in it when the tree hit, I am lucky.....stiff upper lip, I guess.

I found a picture of what my first "car" looked like. It is a 1973 S-1A

It didn't hold up too well (and neither did I) when a certain Mr. Pickup Truck ran Mr. Stop Sign pulling right out in front of me doing 45 mph!
I hate it when asked to partake in the T-Bone Shuffle against my will because the next dance was the Broken Bone Shuffle.

The first car I purchased was a 69 Ford Torino GT for $500 followed by several other sub $500 cars. Since I maintained the family 74 4 dr Maverick on a monthly basis long before I got my license, it kinda felt like my first car - if it wasn't an exhaust problem it would need another starter, but it did take 6 kids, Mom and Dad from NY to Green Bay one summer...

My ex had a '69 Torino. It's what he got instead of a family car, when we were expecting Mary Beth. It's what we maintained instead of furnishing our home for the next couple of years, too. He raced it. I hated that car. Just thinking about it sort of does things to my blood pressure even now.

stew...the only place my minds goes when i read your post is...6 kids...2 adults..one car..long distance..yikes!

never really raced mine, but it did spend some time above the speed limits - handled like a worn out pig, but it was kinda neat..
traded it in on a new Subaru BRAT...

big yikes, Deb....we were fairly young, but it was still cramped - spent a lot of time stretched out on the rear window shelf...

Yabba Dabba Dooooo!!!!! I still remember my first car... it was a granite colored Chevy Impalasourus! Got 25 miles to a gallon of swamp water, and even more on swamp gas (but OH the odor!!!)

my first car was the one i inherited for about 2 weeks, a '62 Pontiac Catalina, baby blue!! Man what a powerful car that still was, and bench seats that stretched out for a mile... I could carry 10 people in the car, another 10 in the trunk... and I know this for a fact!
that poor car died after dad gave it to me after 2 weeks, the transmission finally gave out, and dad wasn't spending on another car so fast... so my next 'first' car which i actually purchased was a year later when I finally had the do-re-mi... a '66 Pontiac Lemans, canary yellow, with a black landau roof! It took me a little time to figure out why the car had been such a bargain... it had evidently been in the water once in it's life... and apparently the seals on the winshield were shot, cause everytime it rained hard, the front of the car would just fill up with water... ever have a car with mildew??? ewwwwwwwwwww....
but like the catalina before it, the car had zip!
of course the zippiest car I drove as a youth was my dad's Pontiac Ventura II, which was pontiacs remodeled Nova... a light weight car that had been fitted with a V-8 and a heavy duty suspension... I took that sucker to 110 on the LIE once... what a thrill...

Geez backhalf, I thought you told me once that your first car was a mustang? Not the Ford, but the horse?

well... that's actually true front half... the Imapalasaurus was my first hard-top... the mustang was my first rag-top!!! and in those days, we didn't use brain buckets, except when we hadda rotate the tires!!! YEOW!!!!!

That's what makes these stories so great! That's why I thought this might be a cool thread. I hate to sound like such an old man...but today's kids just don't wanna start out with a jalopy...they want the best, newest cars right away, & I think they're missing out on a lot of fun. Fun in sort of a perverse way.

I enjoyed the stories from my 2 sisters, Star & the Princess. It must run in the family....many times I've gotten lost & frustrated going somewhere & just turned around & went home. And many times, when the old car broke down, I just wanted to abandon it on the road & walk the rest of the way---but my passengers would never go for that. I've always been bad with directions & mechancal matters.

One time I didn't turn around----I took that old F-85 to my first Arlo concert at the Palace Theatre (the Princess would like that theatre!) in Greensburg, about 30 miles east of here, in 1979. I knew where Greensburg was, but not the Palace. I didn't reveal this to my friends until we were about halfway there.

"Know where you're going, Joe?"
"Hell, no! You know me better than that!"
"@#$%^&*$#%!!!"
"Hey, calm down. Now big can Greensburg be? We'll find it."

Luckily, the Palace was right off the exit. We parked on a side street, went inside, & saw a great show.
