I need a diversion. I love music and I guess I came blame arlo for that as much as anybody (certainly my eclectic taste, that Arlo is an eclectic fellow). Any ways, nobody talks music much around here, but i will. Another great recording from the past I found today. The original Rowan Brothers. Pete's brothers Chris and Loren, They sure look like Pete. THe original one with Everything You Touch it turns to gold and Hickory Day and Love will Conquer, Great Arrangements (paricularly that mandolin funnel sound) and a bit of Jerry Garcia on Pedal Steel. I love the music of my youth!!!

Last Fri., I was watching Friday Night Fights to check out the last fight for Canadian lightweight Billy Irwin before his retirement.

They started out by showing highlights of Irwin's career, including his 2002 loss to the Pittsburgh Kid, Paul Spadafora, during which I saw myself sitting in the stands. I'd seen myself on TV plenty of times before, but this was the 1st time that I didn't know I was gonna be on TV, so it was cool. I had forgotten I was even at that fight.

Alas, for his final fight Irwin employed a strategy that involved blocking Diaz's punches with his face. Siiiiiigggggghhhhh...

I've been on T.V. too Joe. Once in '77 when John and I were on Perfect Match.(the one where they get you to compete as a couple against 2 other couples. A group of us did it for a joke, it was fun!)
And once on the news in '86 (not me but my Jeep and horsefloat and horse, I was on my way to get stitched up) when a maniac ran into me head on. Oh and probably in one of the anti Iraq war marches.

I got on tv too. Let's see I was in the audience at one of Jerry Falwells church services & that was on his tv show. Then when the Monkees did a gig here in 86 we got interviewd on the Ch 8 6pm news for being big Monkee fans. They taped earlier in the day. Then when Arlo came to Roanoke, VA & WDBJ ch 10 up there interviewd him my car was in the background of the interview behind Arlo. It is scary being on tv. Remember being on ch 8-- scary...

I know what ya mean, Cheryl; I've seen myself on TV about 20 times--mostly newscasts relating to the Forbes Field Wall event--also a documentary & (as some of you know) in the studio audience of PBS's This Land is Your Land concert.

That's bad enough to see that, but I was also on the local news twice more than 10 years ago talking about taxes. It's a hell of a lot worse to see myself on TV when I'm talking!

I was on the TV back in the mid 50's - my cousin was really enjoying watching me on TV - then my Mother came in the living room - saw me on the TV and said "Eddie get off that TV set and never do that again or I will tell your Dad!" - well I never been on a TV since then!!

Actually a similar thing happened to me when I was a kid. My folks had a 1950's tv which took 5 mins to come on lol. When my folks were in the other room one nite I climbed on tops of the tv. I guess I was curious. The tv fell right over on top of me. I started yelling help me. I must've been about 5 maybe. My folks came in & found me with the tv on top of my legs & me pinned in. They were worried more than anything. So they rushed me to the emergency room in an antique 1950's car & I got x-rayed. I was fine & no broken bones & nothing wrong with me. I never did climb on top of a tv ever again. The tv died in 1967 due to a bad picture tube going on & my mom got a new one. My dad fussed that the only reason my mom was getting a new set instead of fixing the old one was that she wanted one of the new fangled tv sets everyone was starting to get. I have that old tv now & posted a pic of it online for folks to see. Sorry the pics so bad but I came out bad & I couldn't retake cuz the camera batteries died & I had to re-charge them...

Wow! I remember TV's that looked like that. I think I grew up in the last house on the block to get a color TV.

Of course, now that I'm a parent, my parents have changed their minds about how thrifty parents should be & are on my back about my unwillingness to buy every new gadget that comes out on the market.

I blundered upon an apparently Brazilian release of MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN, still the greatest rock n roll movie (Monterey is close 2).

Had to go into work today & could hear the annual St. Patrick's Day parade going by for about 3 hours.

Damn, how long can a group of people stand outside in the cold listening to marching bands play "Danny Boy" & "Rising of the Moon" over & over? Don't they know any other songs???

Well, let the Irish have their day to get drunk & act stupid, I guess, but I promise you all that you'll never see Italians walking around acting stupid on Columbus Day!

Ah, but Smithwick is now available in the Irish Pubs in America! That's a fine Irish Ale (or go ahead with the Stout) that can be enjoyed while listening to the the likes of Planxty, The Chieftans, the Dubliners, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Kevin Burke or even Van the Man. If you like your Irish music a little more outrageous go with the Pogues, however, you may fall from grace with God if you do that. It seems my family was always running from failed political disputes as our presence in Ireland was deemed politically incorrect following the initial Cromwell-Charles-Orange debates so off to America to the land of the unwanted Irish (Carolina and Georgia at that time if you didn't know). Although, interestingly (to me at least), some entered in Baltimore enroute to Georgia.

But, if your thirsty in an Irish Pub on Paddy's Day try a Smithwick (pronounced Smitick) and I suggest a dram of Powers Whisky or Black Bush to give it a kick!

I'm an ordinary man, nothin special nothin grand
I've had to work for everything i own
Well I never asked alot, I was happy with what I got
Enough to keep my family and my home
Now they say the times are hard and they handed me my cards
they say there is not the work to go around
when the whistle blows the gates will finally close
Tonight their gonna shut the factory down
Then they will tear it down tear it down

By Peter Hames and Sung by Christy Moore (a fine Irishman) during the Reagan/Thatcher Union Busting Era

My good ol' neighbor, Paul, across the street! If the neighbors held a vote, I'd say that Paul is the 2nd-nicest person in the neighborhood. Everybody else is tied for 1st.

I left for the bus yesterday morning at the same time Paul walked out of his house. Rats, I thought, now I gotta say someting to him.

"Good morning," I said, as the rain poured.

"Ain't nothing good about it."

"Well, it's Friday."

"That's a good way to look at it. Have a good one," he said. Then suddenly, "I don't want your dog pissin' in my yard."

"I don't believe he ever has. His usual walk is right up the street. He never wants to cross the street until we've walked for a while."

"It burns my grass off."

"I didn't know. I'll make extra sure that he doesn't set foot your lawn."

"That's why I have a little fence & a sign that sez 'no dogs allowed.'"

The man is delusional. His yard has neither a fence nor a sign. Instead of pointing that out, I simply said, "I hear ya."

As he climbed into his truck, he said, "You wouldn't like it if I brought my 1-year-old daughter over & had her piss on your lawn."

This guy don't know me too well, I thought. I said, "To tell ya the truth, I wouldn't give a shit if you did."

He just snorted & drove away.

Not the best story I've ever told, but posting it is therapeutic. Knowing I could post it is all that prevented me from suggesting that he stand on his lawn & wack off. Which I might tell him if we ever have this conversation again.

(Edited for spelling.)

After you tell him that your dog can't actually read signs( real or imagined),have your dog shit in his yard instead. Not only won't it burn the grass, it will help make it grow.
