yeah, i wasn't really all that familiar with anoushka shankar to tell you the truth, but i liked it too!

then i come to find out that she and norah jones are half sisters (didn't know that) who is also featured on that cd!

over on another thread we were talking a little bit about jamaica...i wasn't very old when i was there, not yet a teenager i stayed with my friend and her family, i didn't hear about bob marley until i was back here and some years after from a jamaican friend here. he wasn't very tall but his speakers would blow you away

That made me a bit nostalgic writing about Jamaica,as well.

I was there in April, 1972.

A guy I knew from Parliamentary Procedures class, Brian (he asked me to his Senior Prom, and I said no) had an older brother who had put together a trip to Negril. The plan was for 5 of us to stay at a farm on the cliffs above the beaches in Negril, and travel from there to the mountain to meet with a Rastafarian. How cool was that in '72, got to go!

I was 17.. ! I had never heard the word Rastafarian, but Brian persuaded me to go ( he is a pot smoking hippie to this day!!

My parents miraculously said yes ( they knew his family) , and the next I knew we were in Coconut Grove , Fla, getting coked up for the flight. Yeah...

Forgot to say the farm , Mama's , is where the soup kettle was on the open fire one night with Canary soup, and later, the one with a goat sacrifice, ya know? Yo , Jamaica.

My hometown......I grew up across from Dinner Key on South Bayshore Dr......What a cool place during the 60's and early 70's!!! My little sister still lives there. I went back to visit last year and was deeply saddened to see it has become a theme park for the very rich and wannabe famous...... :shock:

That is why the West seemed so expanse to me. It held legends and dreams . There is where I went after graduation 5 years later ( 4 + the Master's year was in then....) .
So that was Ann Arbor. It is still a very cool place. Linked backed to places like The Ark keep it cool. The University, and what is stands for, does as well. Pivotal speeches have been heard on the steps of the Grad library overlooking "the diag", a huge diagonal square filled with students with free and fresh minds.

i wasn't yet a teenager...my friend's family lived in kingston and that is where we stayed (she was around twenty-ish). interesting experience!

but never thought i would see water so blue

didn't see any goat sacrifices (saw plenty running around loose though) ...but perhaps a fish or two

and at least one coconut (don't tell larry, it may upset him)

Yes, the water was unforgettable. And one of the best part of the trip was diving into it from a 30 foot cliff!

The cliffs that were the most desirable to jump off were also the steepest, and so the challenge was not so much to find a cliff that gave you clearance to jump, but one which had a way back up. Just across from Mama's was a cave with hole in the back. I'll never forget the old man who stood atop that cave, a full head of dreadlocks and wearing only a pair of brand new Fruit of the Loom underwear! He showed us the hole out and the best point from which to jump. Then stood behind us with an island chant until we were memorized by the sparking diamonds, beaten by the hot sun and aching to jump.

wow!

i don't remember being near any cliffs...only a trip one day across the island...one of the sisters knew someone with a car (a volkswagon bug) (they drove on the opposite side of the road too) and the three of us went across the island and along the coast and hit both ocho rios and montego bay in the same day.
yeah, everyone slept in just their underpants! except for one of the sisters who would wear pressed cotton jammies everytime. i don't remember what kind of jammies i had

but it wasn't uncommon to see folks half dressed outside either!
