Run, don't walk. See it. Doesn't matter which series you liked better, though familiarity with the original series will make it all the more enjoyable. I dare any even marginal Trekkie to leave the theater without a big, silly grin on his/her face!

It's #1 on my personal movie-to-do list; I just need to wait for the opening week crowds to go away...I'm thinking maybe a Wednesday matinee this week or next. I am curious about Zachary Quinto as Spock...such a different role from Sylar (I think!?).

We saw it Friday night...we all thought it was GREAT!! The new cast was perfect, the acting, directing, & script were all good, and great special effects. From the plot line, it looks like there's room for another movie because of unresolved issues.

We all came out smiling, and happy that this great series has another movie out. Even the critics like this one!

Eileen, we went to a matinee today (Sunday) and the theater was not packed but comfortably filled. Zachary is incredible, as are the others. You will (mostly) forget Syler; he's definitely Spock.

I haven't seen it but will when I can. A Huffington Post blogger comments that she was ok with the movie until midway through it she realized all of the women in it were moms, hos or intergalactic hood ornaments.

I'd love to hear Nichelle's comments on that. Trek dropped an important theme if they turned the women into scenery for the sake of action shots.

Yah, I was disappointed about that, too. But it was based on the original series, with characters even younger (and presumably more shallow), and it wasn't as bad on that score as the TV show. We kept hoping that at least Guinan would show up, but she didn't.

They're already working on plans for another movie; maybe a few people a day "singing a bar of Alice's Restaurant" could make a difference.

Nothing's wrong with moms, but it's tiresome for women to always be defined as only mother or whore, although a fair number of us are neither, and never will be. With a few exceptions in Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, the Star Trek series hasn't been much better than the average program or film (and the original series was the worst!) in depicting women as competent and multi-dimensional, as possibly being older than 35, etc. But I can't help it--I'm still a Trekkie.

The original Trek did have Majel as Number One. The studio said it wouldn't fly. Roddenbury gave them Nichelle. They objected. He fought for it. Ears too.

Nichelle said Gene was committed to stronger women characters. Of it's time, it did make more room for such characters but I'm not sure there is enough room for that and Shatner's ego. She was explicit that Leonard was the leader of the pack as far as the cast was concerned. If you ever get a chance to meet her, go. She is the classiest woman I've ever had the privilege to work with. And a minx trickster to boot. My sense was the experience gave her power and she used it smartly. So again, if Trek goes all testosterone, they lose the Trek.

I saw it today and I loved it. It honors the original series, but it doesn't patronize it by trying to copy it exactly. It tells a story which actually is a story and not just a series of explosions (there's action, but it's either well-integrated into the storyline or it at least reflects some of the silliness of the original series); the characters are great and well-played; and the relationships build in a natural way.

There are some women other than Uhuru and the mothers; they are there at the Academy, at the Federation, the Vulcan Council. They are not major (or even minor) characters, but the movie is telling the stories of the original series characters, so it didn't bother me that there weren't more major women characters. Uhuru does walk around in her silly outfit, but so do Kirk, Spock, etc. MBR's voice is still there as the computer voice, which was a nice touch.

The plotting and end of the movie also cleverly open up a lot of different possibilities for the future, so we may see introduction of more women characters.

Being a trekkie myself the only groan I had , was uhura draping herself all over spock (where did they get that from?) the rest of the film was great
it helps that I have seen the startrek new voyages offerings now called startrek phase2 so the different personel made no difference and as it appears to be in a (new)alternative universe they can start all over again yaa another five year mission

Finally got around to seeing it today. Yeah, the Uhura/Spock thing was weird. Why bother? It added nothing, in my opinion. But otherwise, I thought that it was great (being a dyed-in-the-wool Trekie/Treker myself). The characters' portrayals were friggin' great. Scotty & Bones are still my favorites!
