Has anyone else noticed that the Atkins diet bears a uncanny similarity to the diet of the future in Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper"?

hi georgia...it's good to see you again.

i barely remember that movie, "sleeper"...but whenever i think of woody allen, i always remember a friend of mine (who approached me one day out of the clear day sky, and once it was established that we were friends, it was decided that we should both run off to new york to see woody allen, and there were lots of details as to how we would do it). shortly after that, we'd never made the trip to new york together and i haven't seen her since.
i've never fully understood what that was all about.

I never saw Sleeper, but I've certainly heard of the Atkins Diet. In fact, I'm sick of hearing about the Atkins Diet, & most other diets. I'm sick & tired of people who are watching their carbs, fats, sugars, calories, & countless other things...

Whatever happened to just eating?? Will it ever really kill anybody to deviate from their chosen diet for one day?? I believe in eating healthy, but I also believe in appropriateness.

I respect the fact that some folks have their reasons for being vegetarians. I also respect the fact that some people are forbidden certain foods for medical reasons. As for the rest of you, if I invite you to dinner at my home or at a restaurant, shut up & eat what's put in front of you!

For example, 2 years ago, my daughter made her Confirmation & wanted us to host a dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant, for family & a couple of her friends, to celebrate. Her friends' parents were invited as well.

Of course, there were meatballs & sausage, but there was plenty for people who wanted to eat healthy or who didn't want red meat. There was genuine Italian (i.e., meatless) lasagna, eggplant romano, & Italian tuna salad.

Damn it if I didn't get people coming up to me & asking about the fat content in the lasagna, whether the eggplant & vegetables were organically grown, & whether the tuna was caught in freshwater!

Crikey Bro Joe!! I bet you felt like tipping that Lasagna over their heads!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with you on the Vegetarian and Medical Diet thing but I eat what my body tells me, very little meat,a mix of home grown organic, and store bought fruit and veg and cos my work is mental and physical I need my carbs!! I'd faint by morning tea time if I did't have carbs for Brekky!!!
Hey I eat healthy but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna tuck into the Hot Dogs and Cracker Jacks when I am priviliged to share them with you at THE WALL one day. And I won't be asking if the snags are from organic cows for goodness sake. (wait til you see me get stuck into the Hersheys and Reeses!!)

I sure wish I didn't have to watch my sugars & carbs. Dumb diabetes lol. I get so sick of can't eat this can't eat that lol. I probably eat more carby than I should cuz Ii's bad enough being denied sugar but to be denied carbs too would drive ya nutty. I do try to go lower carb when I can but still I am tempted often. Church dinners & finger food events are my downfall. The devil is there & in the form of all kinds of sweets. I once decided to become vegetarian after getting into Arlo cuz he was one & it thought if it works for him & makes him look so good maybe it'll work for me. I lasted a week. After a week I couldn't take no burgers & steaks anymore. So I learned what works for others may not work for me no matter how much I'd like it to...

Woody's character in Sleeper (a health food store owner, if I remember right) was cryogenically frozen and "thawed out" hundred of years in the future where (when?) people considered things like hot fudge sundaes and sirloin steak health foods. Even my doctor gets a laugh out of the Atkins diet. He cited the line from the film where one of the doctors said the problem in the past was that we didn't eat enough fat!

I always get a kick out of it when you hear a news report that something is good or bad for you. Wait a few months/years and it'll change. Coffee's bad...drink decaf. Uh, oh! This just in...decaf causes cancer...normal coffee decreases the risk of cancer. Go back to drinking that! Butter's bad...eat margerine. Margerine has the nasty bad cholesterol & fats...eat butter.

I'm with ya, Joe. I think it's a hoot how a movie that came out about, what..30 years ago (?) and poked fun at diets and related research turned out to inadvertantly predict the future.

Another film that did that was "Network". American television has devolved to what they depicted. Psychic talk shows, "reality" shows, and networks that will do almost anything for ratings and the bottom line, to name a few. What a world!

Glad to see some folks agree. Sometimes I feel like the last sane man on earth. Here's another example:

There's a woman I know who obsesses about her daughter's weight so much that the girl has turned into an anorexic. The docs diagnosed the girl as such & put her on a diet & told the mother to keep a log about what the girl eats so he can review it & make sure she's eating what she's supposed to.

You guessed it---The girl isn't eating much of anything, & her mom is fudging the log by giving her credit for eating things that she's not eating.

Joe, you hit the nail on the head, again! I think folks should eat as healthy as possible, BUT there will always be exceptions to that rule! Like the holidays, as my brother-in-law sez, "Tis the Season for Eating!"

My heart goes out to the Daughter, whom you referred to. I just dont understand her Mom! Has she nothing better to worry after? I wonder what unforseen problems the daughter will have to overcome?

And if ya EVER invite me out to an Italian Dinner, I'd be waay too busy stuffing the great food down, to complain or question silly things like fat content!

They should've eaten nothing & thanked you for the invite! Rather than question their gracious Host. So, that said, louise & I'll be awaiting a wonderful invitation for a great meal! What ya say, lousie???
Once in awhile I can actually fake MANNERS, which unfortunatly your guests, musta left at home!

Has anybody seen those Jelly-donuts????? Pass 'em over here!

That's sad about that girl being anorexic & obsessing about her weight. If only they could be happy at the size they are. If if yur're fat there ain't a thing wrong with that. Trust me!

To those of you who posted to this thread & agreed with me, if you're ever in the 'Burgh, we'll go out for a great Italian dinner.

And if it's you, Cheryl, I promise a meal appropriate to your & Mike's dietary needs.

Hey Joe!

I hadn't posted here before, can I still get in on the deal!

I, personally, think the SouthBeach diet makes a lot of sense, but I have enough sense not to fuss about the gift of a wonderful meal! Happy eating!

You're in, Wyld!

It's a brilliant new concept---feed people so that they'll agree with you. I shoulda thought of that 3 years ago, huh?
