Sydney - Witchcraft, sorcery and fortune-telling are no longer illegal in Australia's second-largest state after the Victorian state parliament sitting in Melbourne on Thursday updated the statute book.

"It's almost 200 years old and is steeped in the language and attitudes of Dickensian England," Attorney General Rob Hulls said when introducing legislation to repeal the Vagrancy Act. "The times have long since passed when witchcraft and fortune-telling represented a danger to law and order or a focus for criminal activity."

The Vagrancy Act had outlawed "any kind of witchcraft, sorcery enchantment or conjuration" and threatened punishment to anyone who "pretends from his skill or knowledge in any occult or crafty science to discover where or in what manner any goods or chattels stolen or lost may be found".

Gavin Andrew, the spokesperson for a coven of witches that calls itself the Pagan Awareness Network, welcomed the legislative change.

"There'll be several thousand pagans in Melbourne celebrating this news under the full moon tonight," he told Australia's AAP news agency. - Sapa-dpa

Yeah Zap, saw that on our Today show yesterday.... I don't think it's changed officially up here in Queensland yet. (of course it is not enforced anymore). I keep telling people that I'm a good witch like Glinda or Samantha............ but they don't always believe me! hmmmmmmmm wonder why??????? My Mom is Granny Goodwitch and people believe her!!

There are a lot of those antiquated laws still on the books here that are not enforced and need to be rermoved...........
but you can still get arrested for riding a horse under the influence!

I think that Swiss cheese, bein' a food-type substance, is subject to food import laws, etc., Larry. However, I think that you would be able to use processed American cheese or any product made by MacDonald's (examples: MacFries casting, similar to I Ching sticks; Ronald's Egg MacMuffin Tarot; or the ever popular MacSilicon shake divination). Does MacDonald's have a "balloon-thru window"?

No, it has to be Swiss cheese. The only record we have of this phenomenon is a photo of Larry reading the Swiss cheese at the tailgate.

Well, as long as you have photographic proof that the cheese in question was being used for divinatory purposes only, then I guess that it's okay..... unless the magistrate has a seein' eye dog and....well, you know the rest of that story!

Of course, in OZ, Larry would have to read the cheese upside-down.... unless, of course the seeing eye dog was hungry... (yum... dog like cheese!!) in which case.... ummm nevermind!!!!

Heck! We got plenty of Swiss Cheese here Lar.. but Wyld is correct, you do have to read it upside down........... and I too have a copy of the said Cheese reading tailgate photo. I'll vouch for you at the landing.
