At last, the PBS/Martin Scorese documentary, Bob Dylan: No Direction Home airs this Mon. & Tues., Sept. 26-27, at 9:00 PM Eastern. The focus is on the Bob Dylan of the '60's. Lotsa rare footage is promised. Heard the soundtrack double-CD yet?

After airing the Dylan documentary, PBS stays in a '60's mood, beginning with Best of the Beatles on Wed., Sept. 28 at 8:00 PM Eastern. It's the story of the early Beatles of Liverpool & Hamburg, as told from the point of view of none other than Pete Best!

If you've never heard Best's version of what he believes is the real reason why he was bounced from the Beatles (which I don't happen to agree with), you should find this interesting. Should be interesting regardless.

This Fri., I'm planning on seeing Ray LaMontagne at the Rex here, with opening act Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion. Should be a good one. Sting, who a couple of you know in an internet sorta way, recently gave me a Ray L. CD & it's so good that I mighta seen him no matter who was opening for him.

If you're gonna be there, I'll wear my Brooklyn Dodgers hat (old style blue felt baseball cap with a white B in front). So if you see me, you can come by & say hello.....or you can avoid me (lol)...your choice.

Finally, on Fri. thru Tues. at a local theatre, We Jam Econo makes its Pittsburgh debut. It's a documentary about the Minutemen (d. boon, guitar; Mike Watts, bass; George Hurley, drums), my favorite band from the 1980's & to me, one of the greatest of all time until boon's untimely death in 1985. (I'm lucky enough to have seen 'em once, while being jostled around on the dance floor, almost as close to d. boon as you are to your computer right now.)

So many old hippies with a narrow-minded fear of "punk rock" (a category where the Minutemen were lumped, altho' it wasn't necessarily accurate) missed out on a helluva band. Just check out the final song on the final album (outtakes & live tracks), & ask yourself how this band woulda fit in at Woodstock when you hear the late d. boon on stage, alone with his guitar, singing:

No, no, no to draft & war!
US out of El Salvador!
This song's for you, Uncle Sam,
We don't want another Viet Nam!
