It fits in well, Wyld; maybe it's the key. We've been despised and ignored by many people around the globe. We were not ignored by the Germans or the Japanese, and people in both countries at the time showed evidence of not really hating us, but more like envying us, or wanting to be like us but at the same time hating themselves for wanting that. (Sibling rivalry on a global scale?) Thoughts, anyone? I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies.

Thanks to Wyld and her mom for their flash of insight. I'm just an editor/interpreter. But the perspective feels right. So what do you do with sibling rivalry these days? Folks I know at work who have children seem to haul 'em off to counseling (shudder). So is the next step a global counseling session?

I have lived elsewhere long enough to understand the way many of the other countries view the US, and in fact an American does stand out in a crowd, I was back in the US for two years before people stoped telling me "You are not from around here are you" (Okay, it was just last week, I was told that, but you get the idea).

Americans have been self promoting for so long that they have very little knowledge of other places, while other places often become America for the silver screen, It is funny to watch a town or city become converted overnight into the set for an American TV Show or film, then a few days later it goes back to it's old self. People from around the world suddenly become Americans, Raymond Burr/Perry Mason, the icon of American Justice was of course from Canada as where so many others. Americans are just too American for their own good, Like a big o;d bear that just wants to give the world a hug, it means well but can scare the hell out of others.

of course I could be wrong but that is the view I get standing by the road.

global counseling, i guess, ceashel...and, if fanatical groups continue to "act out" they get sent to their room for a time out period.. if, after the time out period, the "acting out" continues, we send in a 2.000 pound, gps guided JDAM bomb "now, I told you..."

Nathen, I think I know what you mean. I haven't lived out of the country, but in travel, I find myself trying to be "smaller"; more quiet and inconspicuous, less of a tourist and more of a visitor. Not much I can do about the language and accent--I'm terrible at languages--and people always know. It can be embarassing to be around other Americans and I hate feeling that way.
