Part of me never grew up, & I'll always love cowboy songs. When my sister got married, she had a karaoke wedding reception. Everybody sang the favorite rock-n-roll or dance tunes & the dance floor was pretty lively. I took a turn, & in my first, last, & only public singing appearance, I sang "El Paso." It dragged the whole affair down!

This isn't a lyric, but it's a narrative & it really nails something. It's all anybody ever has to say about Roy Rogers, this from the book "Hometown Heroes" by Pittsburgh's Jim O'Brien:

"A radio announcer informs you that Roy Rogers has died, and bam-bam, there goes another chunk of your childhood. Roy Rogers was a real star, a good guy. He carried two shiny six-shooters, but he never shot anybody.
"He just shot the guns out of their hands and he did it, miraculously, without even drawing a drop of blood. This was definitely a more innocent era in our lives.
"When he got really upset, Roy Rogers would say 'Shucks,' or something milder. We didn't learn anything bad from Roy Rogers."

And the seasons they go round and round, the painted poines go up and down, we're captive on a carousel of time, we cant return, we can only look from behind from where we came and go round and round, in the circle game........................Image

I love Dylan, have seen him about 7 times, have all his records, including many bootlegs, including even the Harry Belafonte album where he plays harmonica on "Midnight Special," but I just can't listen to that song.

StIpe:

These bastards stole their power from the victims of the Us v. Them years,
wrecking all things virtuous and true.
The undermining social democratic downhill slide into abysmal
lost lamb off the precipice into the trickle down runoff pool.
They hypnotised the summer, Nineteen seventy-nine.
Marched into the capital brooding duplicitous, wicked and able, media-ready,
heartless, and labeled. Super U.S. citizen, super achiever,
mega ultra power dosing. Relax.
Defense, defense, defense, defense. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ignoreland. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ignoreland.

The information nation took their clues from all the sound-bite gluttons.
Nineteen eighty, eighty-four, eighty-eight, ninety-two too, too.
How to be what you can be, jump jam junking your energies.
How to walk in dignity with throw-up on your shoes
They amplified the autumn, Nineteen seventy-nine.
Calculate the capital, up the republic my skinny ass.
T.V. tells a million lies. The paper's terrified to report
anything that isn't handed on a presidential spoon,
I'm just profoundly frustrated by all this. So, fuck you, man. (fuck 'm)
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ignoreland. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ignoreland.

If they weren't there we would have created them. Maybe, it's true,
but I'm resentful all the same. Someone's got to take the blame.
I know that this is vitriol. No solution, spleen-venting,
But I feel better having screamed. Don't you?
They desecrated winter, Nineteen seventy-nine.
Capital collateral. Brooding duplicitous, wicked and able, media-ready,
heartless, and labeled. Super U.S. citizen, super achiever,
mega ultra power dosing. Relax.
Defense, defense, defense, defense. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ignoreland. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ignoreland.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ignoreland. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

You are the new day You are the
new day
I will love you more than me and
more than yesterday If you can but
prove to me, you are the new day.
Send the sun in time for dawn Let
the birds all hail the morning
Love of life will urge me say You
are the new day.
When I lay me down at night,
knowing we must pay
Thoughts occur that this night
might stay yesterday
Thoughts that we as humans small
Could slow worlds and end it all
Lie around me when they fall
Before the new day.
One more day when time is
running out, for everyone Like a
breath I knew would come I reach
for a new day. Hope is my
philosophy

Just needs days in which to be;
Love of life means hope for me
Borne on the new day.

From the book "Paperback Writer" by Mark Shipper, a fictional Beatles history, comes these lyrics:

"Pneumonia Ceilings"

(an unfinished song)

by Lennon/McCartney/Dylan

Words & phrases right
Cigarette ash keeps me up all night
How come your mama types so fast?
Is Daddy's flag flyin' at half mast?
Pneumonia ceilings, pneumonia floors
Daddy ain't gonna take it no more
Elephant guns blazing in my ears
I'm sick & tired of your applesauce tears!
Thermometers don't tell time no more
Since Aunt Mimi pushed them off the 20th floor
So say goodbye to skyscrapers
You'll read about it in the evening papers
I picked my nose & I'm glad I did
No one knows my nose, coz I keep it hid!

(At this point the 3 fell on the floor laughing, too stoned to remember the last line.)

The Wind

I listen to the wind
to the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up well I think,
only God really knows
I've sat upon the setting sun
But never, never never never
I never wanted water once
No, never, never, never

I listen to my words but
they fall far below
I let my music take me where
my heart wants to go
I swam upon the devil's lake
But never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake
No, never, never, never

~Cat Stevens

Beautiful.
Peace,
=^..^=

powerful,,,beautiful...makes me feel like i'm not alone.

"your body is rotten by source"

amen and thanks, woody!

VD CITY

Guthrie

Well you've seen your bright visions of glory,
you all built your the cities on high.
I just seen the cold dark dungeon
where the victims of syphylus cry.

They're called to the city of sorrow
to confess all wrong things they've done.
The teardrops [...] are much louder
than in the cities blown down by the bomb.

There's a streetname for every disease here,
Syph Valley and Clap Avenue.
And the whores and the pimps and their victims
all pass on the curbs from our view.

Once young, once healthy and happy,
I don't wanna pull [...]
'cos here in this wild VD city,
nobody knows you by name.

You rise too fast on the scene here,
your body is rotten by source.
Every wind stands full of lost faces,
human wrecks pound the stairs and the doors.

Must you pay your way to the city
with an hour of passion and vice.
I pray that I'll not see your face here
where the millions now burn in despise.

I had no idea that Woody wrote this. I have a bootleg of Dylan's "Minnesota tape" which includes "VD City," "VD Blues," "VD Waltz," & "VD Woman." Did Woody write these others, too?

Does he love me, I wanna know
How can I tell if he loves me so

(Is it in his eyes) Oh no, you'll be deceived
(Is it in his eyes) Oh no, he'll make believe
If you wanna know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is, oh yeah)

(Or is it in his face) Oh no, it's just his charm
(In his one embrace) Oh no, that's just his arm
If you wanna know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh oh, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)

Oh oh oh, kiss him and squeeze him tight
And find out what you wanna know
If it's love, if it really is
It's there in his kiss

(How 'bout the way he acts) Oh no, that's not the way
And you're not listenin' to all I say
If you wanna know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh yeah, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)

Whoa oh oh, kiss him and squeeze him tight
And find out what you wanna know
If it's love, if it really is
It's there in his kiss

(How 'bout the way he acts) Oh no, that's not the way
And you're not listenin' to all I say
If you wanna know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh yeah, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh oh, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)
