Now that the racehorse ARLO seems to be sidelined for a while, I propose that we adopt the horse PEACE RULES as our "official" racehorse right now. The topically/tropically named steed just won the Louisiana Derby yesterday, and is now one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby to be run in 8 weeks. Wouldn't it be great if Herr Bush, the warmonger, had to share the headlines with a horse named PEACE RULES?

I'm in for a blunderbuck or so, even though I don't think the shrub will notice since "Peace Rules" is neither an oil company nor a baseball team. On the other hand, if Peace Rules wins the Triple Crown, Bush will probably conclude that the races are a "Triangle of Evil."

"The worst thing that can happen to a song is to make it official." - Pete Seeger

Does the same apply to racehorses? I would rather "Peace Rules" not be made "official" horse, but maybe adopted as a "mascot"... or something...

But anyway, I'm in!

edited to add:

You say we're 8 weeks from the Kentucky Derby??? that sure sounds like springtime to me!!!

I agree about "official"; that's why I put it in quotes. Mascot it is. Cheryl, I think 4-legged Arlo is OK but, like the folkslinger, needs a rest now and then.

Now that the Kentucky Derby is only 2-1/2 weeks away, I thought it was time to resurrect this thread, especially in light of recent events.

It seems that the two favorites for the race are going to be EMPIRE MAKER (boo-hiss!) and PEACE RULES (our belived mascot). The irony in these names is a thing of beauty and, even though the two steeds are trained by the same man, they have different owners and will be running as separate betting interests.

Need I wonder who we are all pulling for, blunderites?

Well, now you've gone and made me get interested in the Derby--something I am usually not. Have you heard about the horse Zippy Chippy? He has 97 straight losses. He raced at a local park (Thistledown) yesterday for his 97th loss--even the track workers stopped long enough to watch the race. I heard a DJ say on the radio he came in so far last, he couldn't have run slower with an anchor tied to his tail. Wonder if he's related to the 4-legged Arlo? Are we Blunder-betting on the Derby?

Yes, Pat, I know the Zippy Chippy story. His owner is milking the horse's ineptitude for all it's worth. They even stage races between the poor horse and minor-league ballplayers as publicity stunts.

No plans on collectively blunderbetting the Derby; why would we want to jinx the horse we want to win by betting on him? Of course, that doesn't mean that we can't make individual bets on him. I already placed a "future" bet on Peace Rules to win it a couple of months ago when nobody knew who he was and got odds of 66-1. If I collect on that, I'll be sending 10% of my winnings to the Guthrie Center.
