Don't know if it's a sign of spring or not, but there were 9 to 10 people at the peace vigil yesterday (3/06/05), more than usual. One guy was from England, in the states with his American spose visiting her relatives & such. He had words of encouragement, that it was good that we were doing the vigil thing and that he was embarrassed by his government for participating in the invasion of Iraq. He's embarrassed??? Our dumbass country voted a dumbass into a second term!!! Well, I guess dumbasses beget the dumbass. But, at 53 years old, I was still one of the younger people there! Kids these days! Don't know how to protest....don't know how to RYO! I got to try out my new 3'x5' peace sign flag. Seemed to get us noticed more by both the "with ya's" and "against ya's". But the anti-war response was FAR greater than the pro-war, flippin-the-birders which in and of itself was a hopeful sign.

Also, there is a weekly vigil in West Hartford center at the corner of Farmington Avenue and Main Street every Saturday from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. I happened upon the tail end of last week's while my sweetie & I were in town. Sad to say that there seemed to be no under-40-year-olds there. Kids these days! Pretty wierd, huh? Our folks used to get wanked about us going to protests and now I'm getting wanked for not seeing any kids at the ones held now! One guy I talked to even went so far as to say that he hopes they start a draft to get people off their asses!

Reminds me of a early 70's sit in I participated in in the latter days of the war. We were gonna sit in this bldg in Richmond, VA until the war ended. They made us leave saying if we didn;'t they'd call the fuzz on us. I was maybe 13 at the time...

Just a short report on Sunday's vigil. Don't know if it was the warmer weather (car windows rolled down) or if the spring butthole eggs hatched, but there seemed to be more people flippin' the bird and/or yellin' "F#%* you!". But there were more people yellin', "Yay!" or flashin' the peace sign or thumbs up as well. In fact, as usual, the pro-peace folks far outnumbered the pro-war folks. Oddly enough it seems that the fellahs yellin' "F#%* you!" are mostly around draft age. I reckon that if they start a draft that they just might be yellin' "F#%* me!" instead!

Once again, no young people at the vigil. I would imagine it would change if there were to be a draft. It's a sorry statement. There's even a Dead Head shop in the area called the Trading Post that's been around since the 70's. I stopped by there Sunday afternoon to see if they had any peace sign stickers. Not a one to be found! Plenty of flag and "God bless America" stickers, though. Times have changed!

I haven't been posting the upcoming vigils due to my reasoning that not too many people living in the vicinity of them would be reading this thread and due to the fact that it hasn't, to my knowledge, attracted any more people to the vigils other than the regulars & semi-regulars who show up. But I will, if no one objects, continue to occassionally comment on how the ones I've attended have been going.
Today's vigil at the Winsted, CT green had about 9 or 10 people in attendance. For the first time, I didn't hear any "F*** you!"s or see any middle fingers, although a couple could have gotten past my observation. But there seemed to be even fewer pro-war responses & lots more pro-peace. The Peace-people have been definitely outnumbering the non-Peace-people all along, but today seemed just a little better than usual. The worst responses were thumbs down or a couple of angry lookin' guys yelling something.... "Garble, garble Bush garble, garble!"
On a negative note, the folks who organize these vigils had put up a "Peace Post" on the opposite end of the green a couple of years or so ago. It just had written on it "May there be peace on earth" or something similar. I don't know exactly what because somebody took a can of grey spray paint to it, obscuring the words. Plans are in the works to try to remove the paint without removing the lettering. Maybe it's me, but I think there's something deeply disturbed within somebody's mind who thinks that just the idea of peace on earth is something to be obliterated.

Hopeful signs! About a dozen of us mostly AARP material types showed up today at the Winsted vigil. Again, didn't notice any bird flippin' or "F*** YOU"'s, just a couple of thumbs down. But it seems that more and more people passing by in their cars are pro-peace/anti-war. More and more people honkin' their horns, throwin' the peace and thumbs up signs, waving or yelling "Yay!". Maybe the tide's starting to turn. Let's hope. Up yours, Dubya! People are getting sick of your dirty little Halliburton war!

The "Peace Post" that the group donated to the town of Winsted is still painted over. They're going to contact the town and report it. Everybody with the group is all wigged about cleaning it off without town permission. Hmmm....Maybe an act of "un-vandalism" is in order here?

I won't be able to make the next one (6/19/05) but, hopefully, I'll be at the July 3 vigil. Independence Day eve! Hey ADG! If you're not busy any of these first and/or third Sundays of the month, stop on by! Winsted ain't that far from ya! You can join the rest of us ol' geezers! Besides, you might get "them" to think it's a movement! (Hint, hint!)

Peace vigils tomorrow (7/17/05) at the town green in Winsted and Litchfield, Connecticut (at least I think Litchfield is still going. Haven't been to that one, yet). The Litchfield vigils are every Sunday and the Winsted vigils are the first and third Sundays of every month. Both are from noon to 1:00 pm. I've been attending the Winsted vigils since last fall. It seems like more people are giving positive responses as they drive by. And we even had some spontaneous joiners at the last one. And youngsters, to boot! More hopeful signs!

The "Peace Post" that I mentioned in my last post (Too many posts! Brain on overload! Ouch!) was still painted over, even though one of the Winsted Area Peace Action folks let the town know about it. A few of us decided to take matters into our own hands and perform that aforementioned act of "un-vandalism". Armed with lacquer thinner and rags, we managed to get some of the spray paint off with minimal damage to the lettering underneath. Another session or two, along with some touch up, and it should be almost as good as new, I'm happy to say.

At a show somewhere a long time ago, Arlo was talking about the peace movement and how his parents were all involved and he and his friends . . .

And then he said something hugely profound, like why is peace so hard? You'd think everyone would want peace. Peace should be easy.

I often think of that - even if I can't remember it exactly.

Civilization hasn't really come that far.

The warmongers should be the ones out marching - trying to drum up support for people willing to risk losing their lives on foreign soil for one vague logic after another.

The vigils should be held by those holding oil stock and Haliburton options.
