Oh my! If he is the same guy I am thinking of he appeared at the Woody Stamp Show in DC that time & did a nice show. That old guy got down man! He sang alot of Gospel type stuff & seemed like a nice old man. We had wanted to meet him but got tied up Arlo & blunderites etc. We did meet Arlos wife Jackie for the first time & met Pete Seegers nephew... What a memorable nite... So sorry to hear about him...

Blues legend John Lee Hooker passed away yesterday at age 83. He was one of my favorites.

He wasn't really a legend of folk, I suppose...but Johnny Russell, the composer of "Act Naturally," the only Buck Owens hit covered by the Beatles, passed away on Tuesday. This caught my eye because I always liked that song.

I saw that too. He had diabetes real bad & had to have a leg or foot amputated because of it. I think they had some kinda star benfiti concert in honor of him at the Grand Old Opry awhile back to raise money to help him with his medical hills. His other big hit was REDNECK, WHITE SOCKS, & BLUE RIBBON BEER, which is a real hoot!

When the Beatles had out ACT NATURALLY, I had no idea Buck Owens did it till I saw him on HEE_HAW one nite doing it & thought, coll he is doing a Beatles song. I later found out he did it first & Johnny Russell wrote it. That's a great song!

Jerry Garcia died at the age of 53 on this date of August 9, 1995.

Jerome Garcia was a great leader:musically,morally,and spiritually.He didn,t want it,he didn,t seek it,he didn,t ask for it,he may not have even liked it,but he carried that enormous weight with grace,dignity,and a huge sense of responsibility to his fellow man,particularly those less fortunate.If you needed help he was there,of course as we now know it was Jerry himself who need help.
Although he was getting it ,the years had already taken their toll,and that long strange trip is over.But is it really?Not for us:Jerry,s kids.We need to take his message to heart.find our own creativity and our own path,and help try to make this world a little better,which will be a little harder for us now,this is our challenge,Which I feel we can meet if we can all take a little piece of him with us.We all need to be a little more Jerry like and move on down the road,just one more thing I thought you,d want to know-Jerry died with a smile on his face.

I swear, this song was on my mind and it's an old favorite of mine recorded by Steppenwolf called Snowblind Friend . When I found this song on a couple of different websites, I was surprised to learn that it was written by Hoyt Axton. Yes, I knew for many years he wrote "Pusher Man", a song my parents tried desparately to prohibit me from listening to, also recorded by Steppenwolf as well as a host of several other songs made famous such as "Joy To The World" and "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog", "Never Been To Spain" recorded by Three Dog Night. He also wrote the "No No Song" recorded by Ringo Starr. He also wrote "Greenback Dollar" recorded by The Kingston Trio. What surprised me the most was discovering the date Hoyt died.... October 26, 1999.

Female vocalist and recording artist, Nicolette Larson passed away on this date, December 16, 1997. She died of complications of a cerebral edema at UCLA Medical Center. She was 45 years old. Her husband was drummer, Russ Kunkel.

Cheryl, I think you might have Leah Kunkel confused with Nicolette.
Sister of the late Mama Cass, Leah Kunkel and her then husband Russ Kunkel, can be found on the credits on a few of Arlo's albums, Amigo, Power Of Love, and Someday. Russ and Leah divorced and Russ married Nicolette.
Nicolette has recorded with other artists such as Emmylou Harris, Linda Rondstat, Michael McDonald, Neil Young, Christopher Cross, Steve Goodman, The Dirt Band, Jesse Colin Young, Doobie Brothers, Hoyt Axton and Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet, The Beach Boys, to name a few.

Papa John Creech passed away on Feb 22,1994. I met him a couple of years before he died, and thought that he was one of the most inspirational musicains in the world.

I sadly miss him personally.
