I've lived in Charlottesville for 10 years and always maintained that what we needed to draw great shows was venues. Now we have lots of 'em all of a sudden. This was my first show at the Paramount, a newly restored grand old theater. Great setting for Arlo and the Mammals. Acoustic not superb, but tolerable. Seeing Arlo is always like visiting with an old friend. What I forget in the years between each show of his I see is what a great instrumentalist he is. This was my first listen to The Mammals and they were great. It gave me chills to see Pete Seeger's grandson (Tao of the Mammals) and Woody Guthrie's grandson (Arlo's talented son Abe) on stage together. Thank you Arlo for all the great songs and for reminding us of a certain age of who we really are.

I felt the same way after seeing them in Roanoke last night. Thanks for the tip on the acoustics in the Paramount. Charlottesville seems to draw more talent than my area (Lynchburg). Wonder if we could interest Arlo in some of that prime celebrity real estate in C'ville?

Arlo has that great "visiting an old friend" quality - and he is a great instrumentalist.

Remember in the Alice's Restaurant movie, Arlo in college, in his own world - listening to his own thing on the headphones while everyone else was listening to classics.

I always get the feeling that he's still doing that . . . and sharing it with all of us in the audience.

Grandpasteve, I think you may have finally put words to what we all try to describe. You're right about the "headphone" and "sharing" theory. That's exactly how it seems. It's his most endearing quality in my opinion. i've always thought the Guthrie children were the luckiest kids in the world. Can you imagine growing up with a Dad like Arlo?

I've never been one to be a "fan" of anyone. I'm careful about putting people on pedastals because they always fall off. When I talk about Arlo or write something about him, I always feel "queasy" because I hate that "fan club" mentality. But, there's just something about a Guthrie that makes it okay. What a unique person he is!

Mike & I were discussing last nite tha tthe last time Arlo came to Charlottesville was 1993. & He's only been to Lyncburg once since I became a Blunderite in 1988. I'm familiar with Lynchburg cuz I went to Jerry Falwells college there for 2 & 1/2 yrs. I was one of Jerrys kids rotfl. In fact we're going thru Lynchburg on the way too & from our trip to KY next Thurs thru the following Tues. Arlo needs to come back to Lynchburg, Roanoke & Charlottesville. I remember the time Arlo came to Lynchburg he told me that "Maybe Jerry Falwell was right about the pink teletubbie". LOL!
