Shame on you. We drove all around southeastern Louisiana--lots of city driving in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. With a carload of drunks after midnight in Baton Rouge, including an iffy railroad intersection, she got us back to the motel safe and sound. Shame, shame, shame.

Regina's the best driver!

She sounds like a good driver. Last time to went to NY was going thru there to Ct for a Monkees convention yrs ago. I went there around 68 I think it was & went with my folks to visit a now passed on 2nd cousin who lived in Queens in a Huntsville area of Queens. Ya went under the Queens bridge to get to it. I walked with her daughter all over Queens & all the homes looked all the same. My mom asked when I got back where was I as she was worried. I told her we were just walking all over Queens. Back then it was safe to do that. It was just like a big subdivision only hundereds of times bigger with thousands of homes or so I bet. May not have been that many homes but it sure seemed like it. The Good Humor man came thru the area with his ice cream truck & we ran after him to get some ice cream. I wanted to see the Empire State & Chrysler bldgs but my mom kept getting them mixed up. I told her which was which & I was right but she didn't realize I was right until we were getting ready to leave. I told her we should've gone & seen both anyway no matter which one we thought what was. I remember The double parking was bad in Manhattan. If you were inside you couldn't get out & no one could get in the inside parking anyway. They double parked & didn't care. I remember a bread truck overturning on the freeway & that held up traffic. And then I saw 2 cabs in a wreck. One hit the other & they both got outta the car & were cussing at each other lol. My mom said that's it, I'll never drive to NYC again. I think the song Those Were The Days My Friend by Mary Hopkin was big on the radio back then. Seems to me I remember hearing it on the radio alot up there. WABC & WNBC were my channels I loved up there but when WABC went to talk & WNBC to sports I quit listening to them. So that was NYC circa 1968 or so. Have fun at the show folks...

I'd forgotten before, but we've ridden with Regina in New Jersey and Manhattan, too--I was in awe.

Pete is a force of nature. My life-changing epiphany occurred when my high-school history teacher played Waist Deep in the Big Muddy for the class. I'd give a lot to be able to go to the tribute, but you can't always do what you want to do ...

I was able to get my tickets today (with the help of a friend with an Amex card) -- I'll be in Section 218, Row D, behind the stage.

For those headed to Madison Square Garden on Sunday for Pete's Birthday blowout-- please know that doors open at 4 and it starts at 5 -FIVE- not 7 as first announced. They sent out a memo about it to those who purchased tix early. I'd hate to see folks showing up at 7! Thanks Arlo and everyone else for showing up too. This is a benefit for Clearwater (http://www.clearwater.org) which is Pete's life and passion and the reason he is allowing it in the first place. So if you really want to honor him now and forever, give to Clearwater as often as you can and he would be very happy and grateful.

I saw in the Richmond paper where they are having at some club on Broad St in Richmond, a hootenanny in celebration of Pete's birthday. I'd go if Mike were here but won't be going cuz I don't want to go alone. I had no idea they ahd anything like that around here..

There is a similar event at the Ark in A-2 this week.

Yep, it was a blowout. 18K+ people stuffed into Madison Square Garden with one luminary after the next coming on stage to honor Pete with songs, stories and love. Absolutely amazing moments: everyone spontaneously standing and stayed standing every time Pete came on stage, singing "We Shall Overcome" with great reverence, Oscar The Grouch helping to sing, "Garbage," Groundbreaking TV producer Norman Lear reading birthday greetings from Barack Obama (with Lear declaring his introducing Pete in the next moment was the greatest honor of his career), step dancing, rollicking singing and fabulouse harmonies, and of course Arlo bringing all his love and connection. Everyone was beaming. All of it was a fundraiser for Clearwater (http://www.clearwater.org) which is Pete's brainchild and passion, and which really, really needs the $$ in any amount. Another birthday celebration will be at the Great Hudson River Revival on Father's Day weekend, where Arlo and others will team up with Pete. Look that up at Clearwater.org too.

Two Grateful Dead show, one Donna Jean show and Pete Birthday in the same weekend Don't know if i will ever to top this.

It was a great show. I went up from DC, with 7 other family members (from NJ, VA, MD, and ME -- so we covered most of the NE), and a friend. We sat behind the stage, on the 2d level, which was fun -- the view was great, plus they had the big screens on (the one closest to us gave us a mirror image, so we got to read the announcement of everyone's name backwards, which added the fun of solving puzzles to the evening -- really, it was fun). Anyway...4.5 hours or so of a mostly blissful experience...the highlights for me were Richie Haven doing Freedom/Motherless Child (the first performer to get the frat boys sitting next to us -- the slightly less blissful part -- to shut up); Emmylou and Arlo together on Precious Friend (they looked really good up there together -- I think it's the white hair, mostly -- would love to see them do something musically together because their voices also work well together); the acoustic version of "Maggie's Farm" with a bunch of people who were not Bob Dylan; hearing Rufus Wainwright on "The Water is Wide" and "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" (plus he was totally adorable in a cute little hat with feather); Tao leading the final "encore" into "Well May the World Go"; and, of course, just seeing so many people celebrating Pete's wonderful life.

And it was an amazingly well-run show -- no significant lags between "acts", sound was generally really good; I am just in awe of the people who were able to pull that off, and I can't wait to buy the DVD.
