It is with heavy heart that I deliver the sad news of the death of all three Blunderchooks. Night before last a fox broke into th Cook Dome. All that was left was lots of feathers in the Dome and lots more leaving a feather trail down the paddock into the brush. He must have made three trips from the Dome to his lair as no bodies were found.

Sorry to hear that louise. Over the years we have had similar events. First with ducklings vs. raccoons, and then a black bear vs. a rabbit.

I mourn for the Blunderchooks. As Jay said, Spring is not too far away for you, and mayhaps you'll have a new brood before too long.They won't be the same, but will have their own personalities, and I know you will love them (and their eggs), too.

You may not have the space or want more critters, but when I kept chooks (a flock of about 100) in the Texas Hill Country, the fenced yard around the henhouse also enclosed the entrance to the barn space/milking stall of a Toggenberg (Swiss dairy goat) nanny. She was so sweet, and the milk was great. But mainly, goats will keep a lot of critters, including snakes, from harming the chickens. She stomped to death any critters that dared come in there (except us). Just a thought. (Of course, another downside is that cleanup of the stomping product is no fun.)

I saw the fox the night after the murders. He was creeeping around in the dark. Guess he was looking for more yummys. I have no bad feelings towards him, he was just doing what comes natural to him.
After the wedding (my daughter is getting married six weeks from today) my beloved is going to design and build a new foxproof chicken coop, so then we will get the third batch of BlunderChooks. Spo you all have to start thinking of names. I think we're up to I J and K in the alphabet, remember the names have to be some kind of herb or flower or some other kind of plant.

my BELOVED IS A WIZ (he designed and built our first house with my help)with building things so it will be a fox fort knox!
It will have detachable wheels on one end so we can move it around.

I have been through it myself. My folks and I were all dressed up in our best clothes to go to a wedding when we found our's. Only one hen managed to get away with her life. We had around 7. It was a very brutal scene.

Your babes will live on forever in that video I made and now I'm even more thankful that I asked you for those pix instead of using some random ones.
