Well now that the thread is back, that reminds me os something I was going to mention: I have the most wonderful dictionary from the 40's that has an entire section on Amarican slang from that era. Some of the expressions are ... priceless would be too understated. I'll bring some along from time to time, if anyone would like to hear them.

OK, a small sampling, without even looking for the good ones -- and if you like these, there's more where they came from --

tear bucket: an old actress
strides: trousers
take down one's back hair: to become confidential; to induldge inconfidences; to tell one's secrets.
the aim: the morning
swing music: popular music played partly as it was written, partly as it is remembered, and partly as it seems best to each of the musicians at the moment. (I found the definition to be enchanting, or as it would be in the dictionary, the tops.)
toad sticker: a knife
swellegant: swell and elegant
pull in your ears: mind your own business; stop talking (also with that meaning: pull in your horns; pull in your neck.)
flooey; adj. intoxicated; spoiled; no good.
gazabo n. any person; a person disliked
gazook n. a clumsy, awkwrd person; any person
gas pipe: a loquacious person; a slide trombone
full of prunes: utterly wrong; very silly or stupid.
