Since Pete's a Socialist, I'd love to see him run. Though I doubt he'd want to at his age. I hate to say it Pat, but with your common sense and objectivity, you're the best running mate for Arlo.

Dave as Sec of Defense? No problem here. I actually agree with the Conservatives on *some* of their defense ideas. Specifically, I think our security needs to take precedence over the rights of illegals. I'm not for shutting the borders permanently, but I am for controls. And not just for security, but also for livability issues.

I doubt that Pete would be willing to run at this point..plus, he wouldn't say anything when he showed up to be inducted to the R&R Hall of Fame. That wouldn't bode well for his inauguration address..I do think someone musical for a running mate would be a good idea, though. It would make for better campaign rallies. How about Tom Paxton or Richie Havens? I think Gene Simmons is available, but we probably don't want to go there...

Larry, you're doing well. You're sounding like a politico's press guy already. Now you have to turn some of that weaseling into spin and you'll be ready to go.

Why thank you very much indeed. But the ASPCA has expressly identified spinning weasels as cruelty to animals. And weasels really seem to have bad hair days after a rinse and a spin, and besides, it ain't easy on the Maytag either!

It could';ve been worse. We could've had wild Bill in there with his interns. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/laugh.gif" width=15 height=15> <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/laugh.gif" width=15 height=15>

ya think?? i mean...i mean...i mean...i think i'd rather have wild bill getting blow jobs from interns (or anyone else)...seems to me that a sexually satisfied president is much better than a sexually repressed one.

by the way, even in these times doesn't anyone see any problems in the ability of the government to able to detain people without due process? hmmmm...not that i'm not scared as shit about people out there with the motive to destroy this country but in some ways haven't they already won?

They've been harassing and waging unjust war against their own citizens for years. They call it the drug war. Now, because they're picking on Arabs and Arab Americans, the liberal lawyers are suddenly foaming at the mouth.

Where have they been all these years?

Seems to me that stopping people from murdering thousands is more important than stopping college kids from partying. But hey, what do I know?

A rat looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife
opening a package. What food might it contain? He was aghast to discover
that it was a rat trap. Retreating to the farmyard the rat proclaimed
the warning; "There is a rat trap in the house, a rat trap in the
house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Excuse me,
Mr. Rat, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no
consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The rat turned to the pig and told him, "There is a rat trap in the
house, a rat trap in the house!"

"I am so very sorry Mr. Rat," sympathized the pig, "but there is nothing
I can do about it but pray. Be assured that you are in my prayers."

The rat turned to the cow. She said, "Like wow, Mr. Rat. A rat trap. I
am in grave danger. Duh?"

So the rat returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the
farmer's rat trap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound
of a rat trap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what
was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was a venomous
snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever.
Now everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the
farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

His wife's sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit
with her around the clock. To feed them the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well. She died, and so many people came
for her funeral that the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat
for all of them to eat.

So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think
that it does not concern you, remember that when there is a rat trap in
the house, the whole farmyard is at risk.

The war on drugs and the civil liberties issues raised by current government actions are really two very different things. The people jailed because of drug related convictions are convicted of violating existing laws, no matter how unjust they may be. The solution to that doesn't lie with politicians, but rather with the populace. If there was solid grassroots (so to speak) support for repeal of those laws they'd probably be changed eventually. Fact is, the country isn't so sure what they want done about drug laws.

Now the other thing is a whole other kettle of shit. The situation that's caused some of these arrests is real enough. Leaving people to be free to go about their business when there's real reason to believe that their business means advancing terrorist plans leads to..well, I think we know what it can lead to, and knowing what someone is up to is not always the same as evidence of a crime. On the other hand, the potential for abuse of that power to detain people without charges or due process is huge and a real threat, too. I don't know what's right. I want us to be protected against real threats. I certainly wish the guys who perpetrated the hijackings on 9/11 had all be picked up before it could happen. On the other hand, freedom is the good thing about being an American. In the end, the people will speak here, too. As long as the threat of terrorism seems more real than the threat of unjust detention, I think people will put up with it.

If there were only grassroots supports
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
There are. I think that's why they are pissed. There will come a day when America will see the dollar is green, as grass. The proceeds would be cut by a fraction. Thus putting the drug legalization on the back burner for another decade. I'm in NO rush to see it legalized. Don't get me wrong. I just think it lunatic, that something that people been smoking for 1000's of yrs. is still against the law....ONLY IN AMERIKA...

Do ya think ol George inhales every lil once in awhile. Bill did. that was obvious. I'm not sayin it didn't get us in a whole lotta trouble..<img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/eek.gif" width=15 height=15>

But like George Washington once said. Every good citizen should grow a healthy hemp plant. Maybe he was talkin bout rope, but I'm doughtin it!....ral

Not that different Pat. A very close friend was detained/incarcerated for two months without ever being convicted or even charged with a crime. You know how they do it? By calling it "treatment" instead of "jail".

He was a pot smoker (not a dealer) who they labeled "chemically dependant" (a joke), and once they had him labeled, his rights were no more. He could not leave. He could not see family except during certain hours. Couldn't use the phone. Had to jump through every fucking hoop they put in front of him if he ever wanted to get out. They also forced him to participate in their bullshit prayer group even though he was an aethiest. And all of this special treatment, at taxpayer expense, occured under the wonderful Clinton administration.

So, as you see, we are violating the civil rights of un-charged Citizens every day, with little public outrage. Once we end the fascist drug war, then we'll start working on the plight of illegal immigrants.

lcj, I have no idea how that happened, unless it was part of a plea bargain or something he agreed to to save a job or something. Around here it's hard to get into treatment if you want to a lot of the time, and no one has time to persecute pot smokers. A good rule of thumb is if you live in a low crime area, tow the line. They have time to watch you. Otherwise, move to an area where they don't really have time for piddling stuff. I don't think the drug laws are good the way they are, and I'm not sure what would be the right way to approach the problem of a citizen who is seriously suspected of involvement with terrorist activities. I just don't think they're the same thing in a legal sense.

Great article written by John Densmore of the Doors, regarding Rock, selling-out, and the death of artistic purity. It doesn't have anything to do with Michael Moore or politics, but it has plenty to do with "stupid white men", so this place is as good as any to park it. Enjoy!
