Democrats do need to speak out more, but the media is no help. Their idea of fair and balanced is not to investigate anything. There are Dems who are calling the the Bush administration on their lies, but they don't have the media in their pocket and don't have the marketing tools to work with. The right smears any Dem or anyone else who tries to speak out and the media gives them a platform to do so and doesn't bother to find out facts on their own. It really is, as Larry said, the Misinformation Age, or maybe the Disinformation Age.

Note that he includes alcohol. That's the drug that's far more addictive and damaging and that is a huge problem. Obviously making it illegal has been tried and didn't work at all and it's not going to happen. However, although for me, I don't smoke it no more, I've never seen anyone really messed up on pot alone. I've seen a LOT of people seriously destroyed by booze. However, if you seek treatment for alcholism it's going to include giving up pot and any other mood altering substance other than what might be prescribed by a doctor.

In the Bush era, it's important to not "misunderestimate" the value of misinformation and disinformation. I mean it is the engine that drives the electorate........mostly the red state electorate anyway.

But didn't our hand-picked Iraqi leader lose? Bigtime.

Iraqis risked life and limb specifically to vote against the man Bush placed in power, who finished a distant third.

Way back in the early 70's I was taking a Sociology class at a community college. The prof went over a list of points that determined a totalitarian government and even in 1972, guess what? They all fit the god ol' USA. I can't remember all of them but some were:

A national ethos: Sure, there was division. There is now but nobody's doing too much to oppose the 51% mandate, are they (are we?)? The country had, and has, that good ol'flag wavin', USA propaganda and political agenda and we still all ride it like a runaway train, too scared to jump off or try to slow it down.

A one party system: Back then, as now, there were third parties, but only two that stood, or stand, a chance for election (or appointment) to national office, the Democrats & the Republicans. But as my prof asked back then, "What's the difference?" Minor ones at best. Essentially the same old pair of shoes, only we get to pick either the left one or the right one.....but they both stink! As my home state Bush-butt kissin' Senator Lieberman has shown, they're melding into one party, the "Republicrats" or, as like to call 'em, the "Republic-Rats".

One more stuck in my mind- A monopoly on arms: Well, back then one of the Law Enforcement students in the class raised his hand and said, "That's not true! I have a Constitutional right to bear arms!"
The prof said, "Tell me what good your 44 Magnum is gonna do when a tank rolls down your street or a bomber jet flies over your house!"

There were more. This ol' noggin can't recall 'em right off but I do recall that they all fit back then, so they all fit now when there's even more restrictions and regulating being put on everyone and everything everyday. The sad thing is we're all bitchin' but we're still ridin' along on this wagon to hell, aren't we?
