I would have never predicted the people who would so profoundly shape my views about Existance when I was that little Hippie Boy with an interest in Psychedelic drugs on the streets of OKC in the early 70s. I guess at that time I was readily influenced by Artists of which many hands I have shaken. I guess the short list would include:

Dylan
Arlo (have a couple times)
John Hartford (did a couple times)
Doc Watson (Have a couple times)
Ray Davies (definitely in my list of best ever songwriters)

But I turned to a different path as I felt I needed to understand things a little differently, so this is the odd bunch:

Robert Hungate (I did) whose work on termite gut ecology in the '30's was amazing (all confirmed with more advanced techniques in the '80's) and who later characterized the microbial ecology of the cow rumen/microorganisms in his classic 1966 book "The Rumen".

MArvin Bryant (I did) who was instrumental in isolating and describing most of the microorganisms from the Rumen and many from terrestrial environments.

Carl Woese (I did) who predidicted that ribosomal RNA was the most conserved sequence of genetic material from an evolution standpoint(most likely to be lethal if the sequence mutated) and began sequencing and cataloging RNA from every organism he could get his hands on in the '60's which led to a better understanding of evolution and the realization that life on this planet is probably derived from three fundamental living systems (until someone finds a fourth of course).

Ilya Prigogine, the Belgian Physicist who developed the theories of non equalibrium thermodynamics, dissipative structures and order out of chaos from the 60's through the 90's. The best physical explanantion for the the formation and existance of life from a mechanistic point of view at this time! Probably the most entertaining popular version was Jeremy Rifkins book Entropy in which he argued a scientific explanation of mans intelligence based on the fact that intellect allows the easiest route to efficient dissipation of energy.

I know they are an odd bunch, but like I said when your just a young hippie boy who could predict where life would lead!
