CRAWFORD, Texas - The mother of a fallen U.S. soldier who is holding a roadside peace vigil near President Bush's ranch shares the same grief as relatives mourning the deaths of Ohio Marines, yet their views about the war differ.

"I'm angry. I want the troops home," Cindy Sheehan, 48, of Vacaville, Calif., who staged a protest that she vowed on Sunday to continue until she can personally ask Bush: "Why did you kill my son? What did my son die for?"

It would be a great day in American History if as many as showed at Woodstock could and would show up to support this Mother / just seeing the look on that smirky little.........

Hey, myland2! I just read all about Cindy Sheehan on MM's site and was gonna post about it here. Good to see someone else has!
There are some great photos in the articles about her on on his site. Don't you just love the name of her tour? Boy, I wish we could load up the Blundercopter with Blunderites and get down there to back her up!

Not to be a pessimist, Myland, but there's not much chance of that happenin' these days. We had eight people at our roadside vigil in Winsted, CT yesterday and only two were young enough to not have gotten their AARP cards yet. Not to mention that these are the same folks who've been going there since well before Bush's dirty little war started.

While a lot more people are becoming sympathetic to supporting an end to the war and bringing our troops home, not many want to make a commitment even as small as standing on a corner for an hour or two a couple of times a month. Too busy, I reckon.

I know Captain / just dreaming on my part / the fact that the news said she had "bout 50 supporters there last nite is quite a showing now days /
After the Fall of Vietnam / Nixon / pardons / I never thought back then that they could pull the wool over the eyes of the masses again in this Country / but in truth I have less faith in the masses than I did during Vietnam and Nixon's second election / sadding / I guess it is like that old line in some old song back then " money doesn't talk it........" somethings never change /

....too busy, maybe....too hypnotized....desensitized.....feelings of powerlessness, etc is more what i'm guessing.....

.....despite the horror, it is always a moment of uplifting when someone else(one or more) mention that they, too, still care about what seems to be so forgotten.....thanks, myland, for reminding me to be pissed off......and that i'm not the only one.....

All the more reason to get out there and do something. Peace isn't something that we can attain and then forget about. They're called peace <u>vigils</u>. And to keep vigil is to keep watch. So, hey! Somebody's gotta be vigilant, right?

Some months ago, somebody vandalized the Peace Pole at the park in Winsted, CT where the peace vigils are held that I occasionally post about here. Alternating on its four sides was written, "May peace prevail on earth" and "May peace be in our homes and communities". Well, all that got obscured with grey spray paint. There was a lot of yakkin' about fixin' it but nobody was doing anything. "Report it to the town officials!" or "Better not touch it. Might get in trouble!" For what? An act of unvandalism? Screw that!

I finally grabbed a can of lacquer thinner and some rags on my way to the vigil one Sunday. After every past four or so vigils that I've attended I'd go to the other end of the park and work on it for an hour or two. It took awhile, about six or seven hours plus or minus, even with a couple of people helping a few times. Well, a friend said that it was sort of symbolic of working for peace. A little bit at a time, alone or with others. Eventually, the crap comes off and the message (or truth) is revealed. And damn! This past Sunday I got the last of that paint off! There are still little flecks of it here and there and the lettering might need a little touching up (Battle scars!). But dang! You can read the messages again! "May Peace Prevail On Earth!" "May Peace Be In Our Homes And Communities" Persevere my friends, and stay vigilant!

We need to figure out how to get the young people involved...

Members of Military Families Speak Out and Gold Star Families for Peace are on their way to join her, (see http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=51471 ), and that would be the best people to do this, IMHO; he might be able to blow off others, but what can he say to them? He uses military families all the time to bolster his numbers, saying that he "comforts" them. Well, let's see him comfort these folks!

That's a tough area to protest in. It's over 100 miles to either Dallas or Austin, and no place in between has a hint--not a smidgen--of blue. It's all very red and fundamentalist and a little scary. The closest university is Baylor, a large Southern Baptist university in Waco, where creationism in your biology class is a given.

Also, I heard on AirAmerica this morning that she has been threatened with arrest by Thursday or Friday if she doesn't leave. That would be pretty stupid of them.

As much as a lot of people don't like the guy, Howard Stern does come out with some insightful comments from time to time. When asked why he didn't assume the role of leader for an anti-censorship/free speech movement he said that, as a general rule, people don't get behind a movement unless it affects them directly.

Using Howard's axiom, my own reluctant conclusion can be condensed to one thing: the draft, at least in the USA. That would get the young whelps off of their collective butts, as well as a lot of other people. But there probably won't be a reinstitution of it because of the very fact that it would piss off a load of people.

No, I do not support a draft. But damn! What the hell is wrong with people? What the hell to they have to hear to piss 'em off enough to start doing something? We'll let Kenneth Star piss away millions of bucks to investigate "Slick Willie's" slick willie, but monkey-boy Bush lies to start a senseless war that's costing people's lives and we let it slide. Why is it that when people gamble with money and lose thousands of dollars they'll stop before they lose more, but when these jerks gamble with our service people's lives and loose thousands they keep going? You don't hear them saying, "Let's gamble more money so that the money we've already lost will not have been lost in vain!"

Ditto, Shel,Goof and Zap! I'm with you on this! Shel is right the best people for the job will be there to support her.

....now and then someone who thinks of themselves as cowardly or uncaring.....in the midst of a crisis moment...throws away all concern for their own life to save another......
.......in those times, perhaps, the curtain of illusion of our separateness is lifted.....and the truth of our oneness erases all fear and doubt....

....course that's the big stuff.....there's lots of small steps in between....
