Harriet Miers, this morning, withdrew from the nomination to the Supreme Court. She was facing opposition from all quarters... probably because she was most eminently UNqualified to fill the vacancy on the Court.

I am very apprehensive about who the next nominee will be... Bush will probably put up an extremely conservative nominee, with the thought that most will say "...well that's better than Harriet"

Where did Bush find somebody that was not only not qualified, but questined from the left and the right with equal zeal!
Bush has talents that surpass all understanding!

I think he did this on purpose, knowing that Miers would never gain approval... He's going to put forth one of his ultra-conservative cronies now, who has judicial qualifications.

Yes, Wyld... my thought too... awhile ago I thought she'd go down after a negative confirmation hearing, not like this, tho. I think she was a set-up from the beginning.

My take is that Bush likes to reward his friends & sincerely wanted Miers to get the post & was willing to do whatever he could to help her get it.

Then something happened to change all that.

The Senate started asking for internal White House documents that would show what kinda legal advice she had been giving to this administration.

And the only thing that this White House values above cronyism is secrecy.

They have sealed more records & classified more documents as.....well, classified than any presidential administration in history (more than 20 million in their 1st term alone). They have consistently (& illegally) refused to file required reports with the GAO. Bush's records as governor of Texas were illegally sealed & moved under the jurisdiction of a sympathetic judge that he appointed who won't allow any access to them.

And this, my friends, is why Ms. Miers withdrew her name from consideration.

I think she was a set-up. "Well, hey, you know ... we TRIED to get a woman in there, but they just don't have what it takes," then they put in the white guy they wanted all along. You may say I'm a litle touchy on the issue. Yup.

Nothing wrong with white guys, per se... but dontcha think that with 51% of the population being female, we should have more than 1/9 of the Supreme Court represent the distaff?

edited to add:

Besides, you're not the white guy "they" would pick... if it were up to me, you would definitely be considered.

PSB, I luv white guys (well, at least the kind you find around here), but I meant what Wyld said, much more ably than I am saying. It's just that the balance is a bit off in the halls of power.
