I was surprized to learn early this moring that Rosa Parks had passed on. Allot of emotion for awhile. In all the news of her demise, I was happy to learn that she lived a very long and fruitfull life.

** linear note: My 17 yr old son, some yrs ago did a term paper, on Rosa's story. *( he couln't of been about 13-14) And as much as I would like him to relate, to some of my hero's (e.p. Alice's Rest. Dust Bowl Refugees, ect) it doens't happen for the most part. I can't stick folk music down his throat, nor can he get me to listen to his hip-hop, or rap heros....

BUT: Not only did he get an A on his little essay, he talked about it for wks... ( litterally for those of you who know me as I sometimes exaggerate) I listened in awe. As I realized he had no idea, I was well read in the cival rights movement... I'm sure it will be a sad day for lots of people, and especially for my son Robbie. In his short life time, I don't ever remember him being so passionate, about anyone, or anything, as Rosa Parks...

Tx. Ms. Rosa Parks, for making this world, a better, somewhat more tolerable place to be. You will be remembered in life, and in death... You will never be forgotten!!!

rb, I can relate! Michael is 10 and his heroes are Rosa Parks and Harriett Tubman. He'd read and tell me things about them while I was driving. He learned a lot about the civil rights movement and knew before I did this morning that Rosa Parks had passed away.

Boy can our kids sure surprise us, can't they?!?!?!

Rosa Parks was an inspiration to the civil rights movement, and thus also to the anti-war movement and women's rights movements. They are all interconnected...

Rest well, Rosa. Your work will be continued through all those you inspired.

She will be so sadly missed by so very many. Just imagine all of the children who arent old enough to remember her, or even born yet, but touch their lives, in wonderful ways she will!

Rosa Parks is the best possible real illustration of Arlo's talk about the man standing out in the field, and how in such a world as this, it doesn't take much to make a difference. All she did was refuse to give up her bus seat because it wasn't right that she should have to. With that simple act, she has probably touched the life of every single human being on this planet from then to now, and for a long, long time to come. It looks like she'll be lying in state in the Capitol this weekend. Hard to believe this congress is getting something right for a change.

It's the place where, six years ago, President Bill Clinton and congressional leaders lauded the former seamstress for a simple act of defiance that changed the course of race relations.

Friends,

I just thought we should all pause for a moment today to remember the simple act of courage, defiance and dignity committed by Rosa Parks when she refused to move to the back of the bus because the law said she had the wrong skin color. The greatest moments in history, the ones that have truly mattered and have taken us to a better place, are made up of scores of these singular acts by ordinary, everyday people who could no longer tolerate the crap and the nonsense of those in charge.

Today, whether it is a student who holds a sit-in to get the army recruiters off his campus, or the mother of a dead soldier who refuses to leave the front gate of the president's ranch, we continue to be saved by brave people who risk ridicule and rejection but end up turning huge tides of public opinion in the direction of righteousness. We owe them enormous debts of gratitude. It is not easy to stand up for what is right, especially when everyone else is afraid to leave the comfortable path of conformity.

Rosa Parks may have been alone on that bus at the moment of her arrest but she wasn't alone for long. The old order was shaken, the world was upended and, as a people, we were given a chance for a bit of redemption.

Perhaps the best way to celebrate this most important day in American history is to ask yourself what it is that you can do today to make a difference. What risk can you take to move the ball forward? What is that one thing you've been wanting to say to your co-workers or classmates that you've been afraid to say -- but in your heart of hearts you know needs to be said? Why wait another day to say it or do it?

There is probably no better way to honor Rosa Parks -- and yourself -- than for you to put a stop to an injustice you see, not allowing it to continue for one more second. Do something. Fifty years later, the bus we're on could use a few more people simply saying, "No. I'm sorry. I've had enough. I'm not going to take it anymore."
