I was sitting down by the pool of the Caribe Hilton near the Condado close to the town old Saint John. Oh that air in Puerto Rico was nice, beat the hell out of being in the snow. I was sitting there having coffee thumbing through the news paper they hang on the door while your asleep and found an article that said “Clinton disagrees with Bush”! next to a picture of Bigtime Bill with arms spread wide talking to the contingent there with dignity and gray hair. Well Bill said he did not believe George Bush, it was categorically not true that the goals set by the Kyoto summit on Global Warming would bankrupt the American economy. GW says we have spent our capital budget on the future and we can’t afford anything new, unique or different went it comes to consuming energy. We can’t afford no new technologies. I don’t know, it goes on and on with this argument and that but the bottom GW line was change is scary we should stay the course of consuming the earth without thought because it has worked in the past and we can’t predict where the future might lead. My mind wandered off as I thought how different this is than the America I grew up in. The America on the verge of looking the future right in the eye and doing what had to be done. The America that saved the world from bizarre fascist cults, and although mired in post victory arrogance, an America that had the potential and desire to lead the world into a better future (trumpets and shit was playing in my head and I was sitting upright in the seat with a proud American posture). Then I looked on the words on the page again and right there in black and white for the whole world to see I was confronted with an America where the leader says, “We can’t lead the world into a future with sound environmental management, we will let you guys lead and we will drag our ass along as best we can!” That is what the President says, you see. Well, I slumped in my chair and my back started hurting and I spilt my coffee and just Zombie-like, I strolled through the pool area apologizing to everyone, I didn’t make distinctions of race creed or color, everyone I saw for America’s inability to keep up with the rest of the world, apologizing for our great rusted behemoth, nothing left of the youthful exuberance of the great society but a belching farting noxious gas emitting wasteland. It was sad!
Then I turned the page in the paper and it said in a Gallup Poll conducted in the Middle East that the majority of Muslims believed that America did not want democracy in the Middle East. In a startling finding they found that the common Muslim in places like Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt felt that the US wanted Governments in the region they could control and exploit. I was shocked, astounded, hurt deeply! Not only were we not leading the world but it was generally believed we are the last bastion of the lost Empire with fear of people’s freedom. Then it said that some of these countries refused to let the pollsters ask about the right of free speech and public assembly. And I said to myself, now why would they do that?

The world just don’t make no sense so I figured there was nothin’ left to do but sun myself and drink some expensive fruity rum drink and forget about it all like I had the snow back home!

PS, I love ya, too!

I do hope you, at the very least enjoyed the WIN while you were in the North end zone! And the sunny weather in Mexico, as well as the fruity rum drinks.
