We're leaving tomorrow morning to see our first-born off to college. Of course, had Arlo planned his Aug 23 show months ago, I would have driven up to the Church instead <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>

Eric's going to IUP (Indiana U of PA) near Pittsburgh. It's about a 5-hour drive (the way I drive) and I expect to make a few "touristy stops" along the way.

I especially want Michael and Lance to see the film at the Johnstown Flood Memorial (it'll be my 4th visit there and I hope to buy my very own copy of National Parks Monopoly).

I also plan to visit the mall in Altoona and then head over to Horseshoe Curve (where I'll buy the video of the making of the curve) and maybe even Gallitzin Tunnel. On the way back home, minus one kid, we may even go to one of the many caves in the area.

I am the "ultimate tourist" and will be bringing my digital camera, a mini-camcorder and plan to force, cajole Eric into "posing" at some of these touristy spots.

Have a great time at the church and tell Arlo for me I wish I could be there.

Blunderites are just naturally cookie monsters. The more bakers the merrier, and the fatter. You ever notice that the two major blunder cookie providers are pretty thin? Maybe I should take up baking them instead of eating them? Could that possibly be as much fun? Naaah...

Buffalo Gal, looks like we'll miss seeing you again, see you in the fall. Horse Curve and Gallitzen are two of my favorite spots in the world (after Tehachapi Loop). I've also visited the Johnston Flood site and want to get the movie too one of these days. Don't forget to visit the Johnstown Flood Museum and ride the incline whike you,re there. Have fun!

Talk about "blunder" travels! We got about an hour west of Harrisburg, caravan-style, and I started "thinking" about "what-if" and I thought in terms of my 1984 Mercury wagon, traveling behind me, Lance at the wheel, car loaded... and needing a tow truck.. NO mile markers along US-22/US-322.

Shortly after I began to make a mental note of the exits I was passing, I was hit again with the sickening reality that PA, home of the alcohol and cig taxes to pay for public education, cannot afford mile markers.

Then it happened... my temp gauge shot skyhigh and I pulled over, shut the engine. Stranded, having no idea where I was (well, I did, but couldn't tell you a town name). Michael was in the car with me, it was around 95 degrees with 100% humidity.

The plug at the bottom of the radiator (called a petcock) had broken and blew out of the radiator, allowing all my water and antifreeze to drain.

I called 9-1-1 and they patched me through to the State Police. Neither had any idea where to find me! We stayed on the phone for almost 45 minutes, finally PENNDOT found us, they spoke to the cops and, about an hour into our hot, sweaty breakdown, we were "found" by the staties.

Then, of course, the trooper had to do the paperwork and call for a tow truck, all of which took even more time. Then it was a 20-mile drive to a Subaru dealership, another 1-1/2 hour wait there, and we were back on the road.

We arrived at Horseshoe Curve at 6:05 PM... the museum and gift shop close at 6.

We'll try again tomorrow on our way home. We did, however, manage to see a very long train enter the curve (from the parking lot) and heard the engines! I was in my glory as I watched my very bored 8 year old become excited at the sound. By the time to 2 trains passed, we were both hugging and jumping up and down with joy.

As for buying the video at the Flood Memorial in St. Michael (Johnstown), the one they show to the public onsite isn't the one that they offer for sale. The one they have for sale is available on eBay and Amazon and at any National Historic Site or Park.

I'm now on my son's computer at IUP and have finally gotten him connected to the college network.

It's been a LONG day here on campus, but I think we're finally ready to go out for dinner.

Went to Huntington, WV where we're staying tonite. Stopped in nice shops with some handcrafted stuff in there. Fell in love with a mountain (lap) dulcimer in one shop but it was too expensive. It had a nice sound to it. They let me try it out. Bought some neat earrinsg made of coal. Went to the Value City store & the Huntington Mall. Had to go to the mall cuz they have a FASHION BUG store that has nothing but big womens sizes in it. & they have a Deb store with big womens sizes as well as skinny people sizes. the Deb store is a candy land for big women lol. Off to Mikes sisters in Columbus tomorrow-- Sun. I saw a sign in front of a Dairy Bar hamburger stand advertisng they had pinto beans & chicken & dumplings. I bet that was good. Rode the tram ride at Hawks Nest too & saw some Hawks there. Have fun travels kids! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>

To all concerned parties, I did make it home safe from the church last night, after leaving at 12:30, stopping for coffee 5 miles away, then going another 5 miles and getting pulled over in Egremont by this pleasant young cop who may not have been old enough to shave for doing 40 in a 25 (let go with a warning) and getting stuck behind an fender bender on The Taconic for about 10 or 15 minutes, I pulled into my driveway at 4:00 am, thus completing my 2:45 to 3:00 hour drive in only 3:30 hours............I think. I am posting this so I must be home........I think. Thanks for the invites and the concern, but I made it!!! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>

Thanks for reporting in Larry. We didn't get to bed til 3 AM so I'm not sure I was in much better shape for driving today, although it was light out, at least. Anyway..was a great weekend and thanks much to Sherry, the G-Babes and Abe, Xavier and..um..ooh yeah, Arlo!

Just got home... like Larry, my 5 hour drive only took us 8! But, since we left Indiana late to kill time so our newly refurbished 100 year old hardwood floor would have time to dry (yeah, right), and we finally went to the Johnstown Flood Memorial and then on to see the trains pass each other on the Curve, I'd say we kinda sorta made fairly decent time.

I honestly have no idea why, if we left Altoona at 6, we didn't get home until midnight. Altoona is about 1-1/2 hours EAST of Indiana, and Indiana is supposed to be only a 5 hour drive to Reading.

Oh well, next time Lance can make the trip himself, or better yet, Eric can take a bus if he really wants to visit us all that badly.

First day of classes for Eric tomorrow, mine start on Tuesday.

Buffalo Gal, If you ever go up that way again, try Penn's Cave, not to far away from State College. The whole cave tour is done in water by boat.
