1 month to go from yesterday!!!

The 45th anniversary celebration is gonna be the best one yet, for a lotta reasons I can't disclose yet.

The Wall celebration will also see the debut of a new baseball book, Fantasy Camp by Jim O'Brien. It includes a picture of yours truly (the 2nd time my pic has appeared in a baseball book) & also a photo that I took (this is a 1st for me).

Sooo...now that I'm a published photographer, ya'll gotta start showing the proper respect for me (lol)!

I told Mike about some of your Wall post & he was familiair with the wall stuff being a baseball nut himself. He can go to church & after the service folks are asking him about the Yankees or whatever team. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>

Starts promptly at 1:00, just like the game did way back when. It's right by the remains of the OF wall, near the Joseph Katz School of Business. Maz has informed me that he won't be able to make it, but we expect Bob Friend & some other ex-Buccos. The Benny Benack Band will be there to perform "Beat 'Em Bucs" & other tunes.

Mike wants to know if Forbes Field is still standing? Mike said he thought they tore it down & was wondering. I read him your last post...

Mike is correct. The last game there was June 28, 1970 & it was torn down by 1972. They left up part of the outfield wall, where we hold our event each year. Also, home plate & the flag pole were left in their original spots. Tell Mike that the ivy is still on the wall; he'll appreciate that.

Mike says thanks for the info & good luck with the Forbes Field event. That's history he said. He had been wondering if he was right that it had been torn down...

We had another great event on the 13th (altho' it was a bummer getting our hot dogs from another source). How about this? For the 1st time ever, I met a Blunderite in person!

Hye, GlB, as you left, didja see the guy in a full Pirates uniform with #21 on the back? We went to talk to him & found he was a professional actor, scheduled to play Roberto Clemente in a performance at the library, & that he plays many ball players & has acted in 10 different states. We didn't recognize each other at first, but it turned out that we were roommates during my 1st year in college! Hadn't seen each other in over 25 years. The day was one bizarre coincidence after another...

Yea, I saw that guy, and was wondering what that was all about. I even thought it might be a former Pirate, then said to myself, "naaa, what would a pro be doing here dressed in his uniform." That figures, he's an actor. Perfectly understandable, and also a plug for the play or musical. Good to meet you there with Cous' Dan.

joe, did you go to the all star game?

Joe, did you go to FanFest? My son was volunteering there the whole weekend.

No on both counts. Woulda been nice to have gone to FanFest but I didn't have time.

As for the All-Star Game, I saw the games in 1974 (Pittsburgh) & 1981 (Cleveland). The world has changed a lot since then. Today, the real fans don't get to go to the All-Star Game or World Series. Over half the tickets are taken by MLB, FOX, & various corproate sponsors & given to dignitaries. As for what remains, season ticket holders get first crack. What's left---which ain't much---is sold to the general public, but at prices near $400 I wasn't gonna do it.

I did get to attend the Futures Game on the preceding Sunday. The festivities kicked off on the Friday before that, when the Forbes Field Wall was dedicated as a historic landmark, 36 years after the final game there. (What took so long?) After the dedication, there was a Little League All-Star Game at adjacent Mazeroski Field between teams in the uniforms of the 1936 Pirates & 1940 Homestead Grays. They called it "The Game That Never Happened" coz the Bucs & Grays never actually played each other, despite sharing the same ball park. Somebody decided to rectify that, using Little League All-Stars. My son played in that game. It was a helluva good game, a lotta fun, & to me the best event of All-Star Weekend around here.
