Today commemorates the birthday of Marjorie Mazia Guthrie.
Born Marjorie Greenblatt on October 6, 1917, in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Isidore and Aliza Greenblatt.
Where have I heard that name before, Aliza ?
Marjorie was Woody's second wife. A former leading member of Martha Graham's dance company, she also worked as a dance instructor and had her own dance studio in Brooklyn. She married Woody in 1942 and they had 4 children,
Cathy Ann, Arlo Davy, Joady Ben, & Nora Lee.
After Woody had lost his battle with Huntington's Disease in 1967, Marjorie Guthrie founded the Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease in order to raise money for research, and to provide counseling and support for HD families. Eventually, she closed the Marjorie Mazia School of Dance, and devoted her life to the committee until her death in 1983.
She would have turned 84 today.
