How do you guys feel about...or have you seen the new commercial with Dylan not only singing in the background...but appearing in a Victoria Secret commercial? It's actually a very cool song, but it's a VS Commercial!!! Oiy. I keep thinking of the story (folklore or not) of Pete Seeger's reaction when Dylan went electric. If electric was a sell-out then how should we feel about this? I'm just interested in your opinions...cause I'm not sure of mine yet.

ALSO, and having nothing to do with anything - but I think this is the most confusing part to me...my daughter who only thought of Bob Dylan as Jakob's father - and couldn't before pick Dylan Sr. out of a line up - Thinks (in this commercial) Bob Dylyan is a hottie! Ive considered Dylan a brillant, intellectual icon. But a hottie? I'm stunned.

If Bob wants to sell underpants.....why not? It may introduce him to a new audience! Besides, Bob and many of us are getting to the age where this may be good practice for him to perform in a commercial for "Depends" or something in the future.

Actually my view is that it changes nothing he has done in the past, so why judge him on this?

It's "exposure" for him, for sure. I don't care if he sells bras and undies, or CDs.... and as for Reg's daughter thinking he's a hottie.... oh well, maybe to the kids who've never seen him, maybe he is.

At least she didn't say, as MINE would, eeewwww, he's so OLD!

i can't help it...i see a sparkling sense of humor in his eyes...
the way it was done seemed just fun to me...it made me laugh!
and i think he's a hottie too!! (i apologize bob, that was probably a little too much information for you...forgive me???)

...while at the same time, he reminded me ever so slightly of oil-can harry...i don't know!!!!

i saw that commercial a few moments ago... i think it hasn't hurt mr. dylan at all. i think it put a bit of a spring in his step. i can vouch for that having seen him saturday night at bender arena. he was shaking his hips and walking a bit. even told a joke... kind of.

Being a firm believer in the American free enterprise system, I'm all for it. Besides that, if we have to hear songs on commercials all day long it might as well be something we like. What I don't like is when someone owns the rights to someone else's songs and allows them to be used in a manner that is against the wishes of the author, like the Michael Jackson/Beatles situation.
Does anyone recall a portion of the song "The City of New Orleans" being used in a commercial a few years ago?

...that's true, baldwinville....arlo's version of CONO was used for a Folger's commercial a few years back..... though i think, and may be wrong, that
Steve Goodman's family may have prospered a bit from that....

...in those days, the newsgroups were very active and Arlo took more than a few hits for this step into commercialism....and thereby distracting from folksinger's "purity" .... Arlo wrote a couple of compelling messages and so did a few folks from here and there....but it was hotly debated.....

I'm usually not home much and when I am, the TV isn't normally on, unless Michael's watching cartoons or the news.

What types of channels is this commercial airing on? When I do have the TV on (late at night), it's Discovery or TLC or Court TV... anything that's airing Ancient stuff or Forensic stuff.... I've never seen the commercial.

I don't think City Of New Orleans was used in a Folgers commercial. Arlo actually sang the Folgers song. CONY--with someone else singing it--was used in a LAXATIVE commercial! "Good morning, America, how are you?" I seem to recall a winking waitress at a truck stop.....

I saw him play in DC over the weekend (which was amazing by the way)... and i kept thinking of that damn commercial.
i dont think it was a bad choice... i mean hey, good for him! Gettin older and still lookin good!

Upon further reflection, I think it's all ok unless Bob decides to model some of the frilly Victoria's Secret stuff himself. Or maybe that's what Victoria's secret has been all along?

Never seen the Victorias Secret commercial yet. Their underwear is too small to fit most people anyway LOL! I do remember the CONO laxative commercial & the Folgers one Arlo did. When I first saw the Folgers ad I was like am I going nuts or did that sound like Arlo in that ad. I wish they had shown Arlo in it as they were singing tho. I had never thought of Dylan as a hottie before (he still looks good tho) but Arlo is definately a hottie! I once told Mike that Arlo is a sex symbol for us over 40 women. He still looks good.

I think I saw the tail-end of the commercial the other night, as I was sitting in a soporific state in front of the TV. It startled me awake. I mean, how often is Bob Dylan on TV? Of course, I wasn't sure if I really saw it or just dreamed it, but either way, it made me laugh. The whole idea of it was just so funny! Now "funny" is not a word I've ever really associated with Bob Dylan, except for the stories Arlo tells, and it's not Bob himself that's funny in those stories, but the way Arlo talks about him. The man just always seems SO SERIOUS!!! I realize that I don't know the guy, so maybe I'm not giving him enough credit, but I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way about him. I remember years ago when Bob was turning 50, it was all over the news, and reporters were asking all kinds of people what they would like to give Bob for his birthday. They asked Arlo what he'd like to give him, and he said "A sense of humor." If Bob's finally gotten a sense of humor, well then, God bless him! I'm happy for him! I've had a sense of humor since I was a little kid, and know that I couldn't survive without it. I hope Bob's sense of humor will help him survive a good, long time!

Will I run to the mall and head straight to Victoria's Secret and buy some underwear because of this commercial? No, but I might go to the music store and pick up a Bob Dylan CD.
