You guys HAVE to be the ones to nail this for me;

...Back in the mid(?) 70's I was relaxing at a friend's house and listening to this great tune, a story-telling tune, about a kid in 1912 who worked in a Mexican rope factory that happened to burn down one day, and as this kid escaped the conflagration he caught a whiff of the burning rope, which caused him to slow down his escape and catch a few more whiffs of the burning rope, which convinced him that simply escaping wouldn't be nearly as fun as escaping with a couple hundred feet of fresh Mexican rope...Which he did...Followed by his eventually being hired on the Titanic (with the rope), and gives way to a completely different theory as to how the Titanic struck that iceberg and describes the responsible length of rope to a tee...

I remember my friend telling me that it was JT who wrote and recorded that song, but I've never heard it since and have never found it on any JT discography...But I swear that it has all the earmarks of an Arlo tune...I could very well have misheard the name my friend gave me, as we were acting out parts of the song as we listened...

Can anybody help me out here? I did a cursory check of Arlo's discography and nothing rang a bell (well, THAT bell anyway...), so I'm lost again. I'd love to find a copy of that tune.

Ahhh.....I remember well, actually not really so well, actually I can hardly remember it at all - you see it was the 60's. The Legend of the USS Titanic.
Seems for a while it was on FM every night. Great song!

Jaime Brockett's album that his song "Legend of the U.S.S. Titanic is on was/is titled "Remember the Wind and the Rain" A 1968 date is listed on the back cover. It was released on the Capitol label.

You did kinda startle me Agnes. But that's ok, I needed it. I inserted the first mate and his rope into Starship: Blunderer story on the W boards. I also meant to insert Jack Johnson, but made a Freudian slip and called him George Jackson (from the Dylan song I guess).

Arlo and Jaime toured together some in the 70's.

funny about that...i thought the george jackson thing was just being clever.

truth be known, i'd never heard of that song till you started dropping mysterious clues...i had to do a little research.

I appreciate you all bringing up this subject. I am fascinated by this song. He makes reference to Italian carpenters and Jews from Miami Beach, as well as a variety of aspect of American culture, that, to this day, dance through our collective head.

It's so relaxing to hear a crazed folk interpretation of what's rambling through my head even today.

Folk music of this frenzied nature reminds me of many nice things that usually only being with family makes me feel. Like Arlo.
