Any chance of including "House of the Rising Sun" on future albums? It was one of my favorites from the Irvine show in November!

I AGREE!!!!!! Arlo does one of the BEST versions of House of the Rising Sun that I've ever heard! I heard him do it at the revival at the Church in October! IT'S GREAT!!! I think that's a wonderful idea to include it on a future album! I vote "YES"!!

I always enjoy it when Arlo does "House of the Rising Son" however I have to agree with rbrown that The Animal's version is the best one I've heard. They of course copied it from the version on Bob Dylan's first album, which he had copied from the way he heard Dave Van Ronk do it.
After Dylan recorded it Van Ronk had to quit doing the song because everyone was accusing him of copying Dylan. After The Animals recorded it Dylan had to quit doing it because everyone was accusing him of copying The Animals. This "folk process" thing can get pretty strange sometimes.

Oh, a few of us heard the Animals version. The way a person first hears a tune is the right way to play a tune (for that person). My daughter will turn to me and swear up and down that some tune doesn't sound right if I used to sing her to sleep with it.

I don't remember the Animals doing as good a job of flatpicking.

Kurt, even tho Eric Burden isn't the prolific song writer that Arlo Guthrie is, I take for granted what he said in the linear notes on 'Son of the wind'.



In my opinion this is Eric Burden's song... It belongs to the Animals... & folk singers just don't do it justice.....

I have to throw in the version done by Mary Travers and B.B. King done in 1996. It really gets me. I grew up with the version by the Animals and have heard the Dylan one too. I have heard Arlo do it live several times and I would love to hear him record it. Something about Mary touches a heartstring.

Ever hear Dylan's electric version that he recoreded before Eric Burdon's version but wasn't released until years later with some computer program? Quite good. Joan Baez does a good cover of it in her shows, more believable than the version she recorded 40+ years ago.

Gee, as a member of high school band in the 70's... we always did the version by Frigid Pink.....

which is a physodelic version of all of em...

but my vote goes for the Eric Burden version as the best one...

You know just call me weird but Eric Burden's always made me wonder why a guy didn't want to live in a whore house? I mean come on!!! There I was a teen with a radio and raging hormones and this English guy crying about tellen my momma not to let me do what he done...just didn't get it

I liked The Animals & Arlos versions the best. The gospel group the Blind Boys of Alabama do a great version of Amazing Grace to the tune of House of the Rising Son...

Even though it has been sung by many men, I'm pretty sure the song is sung from the point of view of the regretful "good girl gone bad." Of course I can't find the lyrics at the moment, but that's my impression.

Did ya ever hear of the clap? At least that's what we used to call it about the time I first heard that song played. Sorry, but a "house of ill repute" as my father used to say, doesn't sound like much of a life to me.
