Hello all!!!....Hey!..I just yesterday listened to Arlo's 1996 CD, "Mystic Journey".......I'm still reeling..and listening!..At least a dozen times now!...What sweet music!..
Have most of you Blunder Heads already known about this CD?...& I'm the last to know?...It's awesome!!!...I haven't seen it on Arlo.com or the "Rising Son" webb sight...I found it on Amazon.com...(Can I say that here?)....But trust me...It's a "MUST HAVE!!!!"....
Those of you who know it...I would really like to hear your comments & favorite lines...I like.."Doors To Heaven"...No. 1..."Moon Song"..No. 2..."When A Soldier Makes It Home"...No. 3...+ all the rest are keepers!!...No. 10 is Dylan, dead on!!!!.."All This Stuff Takes Time"....
So let me know what you think, & let me know if you need help in locating a copy...

MFK: I love most all the tracks. My favorite is "Face Of Time"> If they play one song at my funeral, it would be that. It sorta sums up life to me. But then again, I'm wierd.....

I personnally could never figure out, why more of the songs on this, never end up on setlist at shows....

Not to sound, partronizing, but it has that 'Bob Dylan Feel" and I always dug Guthries Voice as compared to Bobbys...

It's my favorite of his albums.

It's an album by a grownup for grownups. Britney Spears, for example, could not have done this album- she just hasn't lived long enough. (I don't really mean to pick on Britney Spears. Arlo couldn't have put out this album at age 24, either.)

Mystic Journey is totally radical!...The tune "Stairs" reminds me of the Beatles "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" with sound of the French horns whining gaily and I think of climbing a spiral staircase leading to reach the sky and touch the stars to put a sparkle in your self when you feel gloomy with no brightness around you.

As a matter of fact this past school year during the fall semester I played it at work while setting up kaiser and grinder rolls built up my productivity level and was sweating, thanks for the great workout music, Arlo ...I had all sorts of co-workers ask me "What CD is that?"
I replyed Arlo Guthrie and just about 75% of the people dropped their jaws and gasped "No way" I said "Way" They are all like "OMG! Arlo sounds like just Dylan!" A couple of people asked me if they could borrow it.....Like heaven, man! The age group was somewhere from 40 to 50 and all thought Arlo retired long ago I think because of his commercial exposure back then. Most of them have listened to "Alice's Restaurant" and "City of New Orleans" back in their hey day.... I thought I was the only awkward piece of puzzle in a bunch that is an Arlo freakadroid

Peacelove&Arlo: Funny you made the 'Beatles' analogy..... Arlo's music, has often times, had my head spinning, like his music was Beatle-ish... (e.p. The album Someday. The whole thing reminds me of Beatles Music, but it's truely Guthrie, and original... But it sounds like the Beatles... )

And other albums come to mind, where I hear the beatles. none-the-less, that Guthrie Originalality... ( is that a word) I guess you undersand, my hypothesis???

It's funny sometimes, that people are turned on to Guthrie, and think, jeez, he's still playin, and writing.... I thought that guy was dead, or retired living on the Island of Maui or somethin..... I was one of those people back in 1989....... I saw a show advertized, drove about 300 and some miles, and my wife, fell in love with his live performance. In between the laughter, of his antidotal tales, of living on the road, his family, and Woodstock, you could hear a pin drop.... ( In a Venue of 4500 people) That in it'self, is a testiment, to his legion of fans.... They wanna here what the man has to say.. He can turn and odd-ball remark into a funny side line of humor, have you rolling on the floor laughing, and a few minutes later, have you all serious, giving your conscience, a quick overhaul, and thinking nuthing of world peace. And it's not hard, in this day and age, to make a huge differance, in ( to quote Arlo ) A WORLD THAT SUCKS< LIKE THIS ONE!!!!

I've totally burned my family out on Arlos' huge catelog of music.... But when my wife and I go to live shows, we both are caught up in the magic, of the moment. And that moment is, what it is.... Arlo Guthrie....

linear note: I'm very pleased he is doing more of his Dad's stuff, the older he gets.... Woody is my hero... & nuthing could change that..... I've read allot of his books.... ( seeds of man, bound for glory ) he was NO angel.... but he spoke the truth... and believed in the underdog... I trust Arlo has carried on his dad's philosophy.... We are all human, and vulnerable.....

These may be nothing more, than a collaberation of words... ntm: bad spelling.... But it comes straight from the heart.....


And Arlo, I look forward to future releases..... Why must you be so slow? I don't know, nor do I care. Your always worth the wait......

Yes I understand your hippopotamus I mean hypothesis ...I totally agree with you about the Someday CD sounding Beatlesque. IMO I think the track entitled Russian Girls has an alternative 1980's new wave punk style of sound like totally!

Now that you mentioned 1989 I was driven temporarily into Arlo. This was August of that year when Woodstock turned 20 and there was a TV special on the Festival that consisted of lost performances, musicians that attended the garden and were being interviewed. When Arlo was on TV I was like OMG!! NO WAY!! He had long salt and pepper hair and a goatee ! and was being interviewed for 30 seconds WOW!! The best he has ever looked since the 1970's. Coincidentally Rolling Stone Magazine had a huge article and pix about Woodstock and personal feedbacks of the performers that attended along with their now and then pix. Arlo was in that magazine and OOOOHHH!! What a cool pic of him I fell in love with it and ripped it out of the magazine and placed it under my pillow no no no no no only kidding! One week later I bought the Best of Arlo Guthrie cassette tape and played it constantly until I went into a phase of immature life at 23. A few months later my mind just faded away from Arlo. Being a young girl I had lots of nasty girl opportunities partying, riding with in cars with boys, coiffed hair, Madonna clothes, dance music, spandex,red lipstick, just to name of few of the fads then. I still do not remember what happened coolronious Arlo pix, must have used to make a spicy sandwich with it beats me I was drinking at the time.

Thanks to my mind celery mind I was glad to find Arlo again after watching Woodstock and jogging down memory lane into my second childhood and still enjoying my second childhood life been treating me good ....Now I don't want to grow up "I'm A Toys R Us Kid"

I noticed that Coming Into Los Angeles reminds me alot of the Beatles song Glass Onion. I wonder if Arlo was subconciously influenced by that song? I'm probably the only one who noticed that lol...

I've always pictured Coming Into Los Angeles as a Grateful Dead influence with the rhythm of the electric and steel guitars. Also the song Every Hand In the Land has the melodic style of Panama Red by New Riders of the Purple Sage or maybe the Dead's Devil Is a Friend Of Mine if that is the correct title I have not listened to my Dead CDs in sour hard cider ages. I am not trying to be critical in any way to anybody including Arlo. I am expressing my colorful intentions of music sounds and rhythms which makes it more enjoyable for us units to listen to at different mood levels

Ok, let's throw this thread for a loop... all these comparisons to other people... what about this:

What Arlo songs sound uniquely like him... basically what do you think he's done for which there is no comparison?

Dave this comes easy for me! The only Titles that reminds me of the Beatles is 'Someday'..... And one or so tracks from 'Mystic Journey'.... and Mystic Jouney is the only Title that some of the tracks remind me allot of Dylan...

Wake up Dead.... Original Arlo.....

The rest, as far as I can pick my brain, is all the Folkslinger.....

Especially Alices Rest... but there all Arlo.... to say this sounds like Dylan, or this sound like the Beatles is an exception..... I've said on Discography, that the B side of Alices are the best Folk songs ever written, and they are all Arlo. His music progressed, and changed from the master, but it's as original as any Artist I can think of....

After all, Bob Dylan started out, sounding like Woody Guthrie.... When he started Electric ( being the Real Bobby ) people freaked out.....

I heard a rumor Pete Seeger had an axe and was gonna cut the wires... ( but I also heard the reason he was SO mad, was Petes Father was in the audience...)

interesting concept dave - i think that arlo started out being mostly 'arlo' - go back to the 'b' side of Alices Restaurant, hell, go to the 'A' side! All of that stuff is arlo bein' arlo.
I think as he matured and felt his oats, he spread out to encompass other styles and sounds beyond his own, making them 'his own' as it were...
Thus you go from the Motorcycle Song which is classically only Arlo, to stuff he makes his own, such as when he's doin' 'Don't think twice...' or St. James Infirmary

just my 2 cents...

The obvious "answer" is Alice and most of "Mystic Journey", however, part of Arlo's talent( a talent he shares with some other artists) is to take whatever song you are doing and making it yours, even if it wasn't in the first place. Here, the list grows larger......... CONO for example.

So what you are saying is if Arlo went on American Idol... He'd get the "I'm feelin it dog!"... You made it your own... lol!

Actually, I love some of the songs that other people wrote, but Arlo took... in fact, I just sent off an e-mail to see if maybe a certain one could make it back into the setlist in the near future. It's been ages since I heard him do "Freight Train"... And of course, it's not on any recording of his - much like "Keys to the Highway" and "Green Green Rocky Road"... man those are some great tunes!

Man, now that I think about it, I should have asked for Keys.... think that's the best of the bunch!
