well i thought it was an interesting experiment....but not sure what it reveals that's so surprising... that a celebrity that folks pay alot of money to see is
passed by????....not such a big surprise....

...that people will walk by really good music?.....that's sad, but not surprising...happens all the time....

...or the scariest of all... that so many of us are so unaware of what's around us they wouldn't even hear....no matter who it was...

After a guitar lesson at about14 or so, I was waiting in front of a grocery store for my dad. After a few minutes I started noticing this older woman was just standing there too. I was starting to feel a little uncomfortable when she finally said to me, "well, aren't you going to play?" I guess if I had been past the Smoke On the Water, Dust In the Wind ability stage I could've begun a professional carreer.

I'm willing to bet that more people would have stopped if they could. I'm fortunate in that, if I'm fifteen minutes late, it's not a big deal. But I have friends--same employer, different department--who could lose their jobs over it. Maybe it was as much a test of how job-driven Americans are.

I re-read my earlier post and it sounded critical of individual Americans--not what I intended. (I'm a card-carrying member of the 60's 'blame the establishment' generation.) I was kind of stung by something in the article about how in Europe, more people would have stopped. Most people here get caught very early in a system that doesn't give them a lot of room for or time to make choices. Before they know it, they have kids who need food and medical care, and/or they have parents who need the same, and they have no safety net and they have a boss who doesn't think they need no stinkin' music to distract them from work. It sucks.

My ex-sister-in-law used to do that with a flute with a trio. They hung in Manhattan subways when they weren't playing Bar Mitzvahs.

Guess I'm the only one here who wouldn't have stopped.
