Congrats to Al Gore - and team of many - on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. And the spoils are going to the those that need it. And huge kudos to the panel for seeing into tomarrow, for awarding an insightful Nobel Peace prize in global warming , and for intercepting and opening up this topic as a potential issue of armed conflict. Who else would have the insight that water is as thick as oil?

Rich man/ funny man/ ex- VP overshadowed by the politically stronger Hillary for the #2 spot in the Clinton administration, Al, you have your day now, and are in a better place. Thank you for what you have done to raise awarenss to the consequenseces of global warming and uncheked environmental damage. Gore is green!

It is truly bizarre to think that even a few short years ago we were arguing on these very boards about whether global warming truly existed & was a threat/was our fault.

Slow learners, we humans. I have an early '70s text book from an "evolution & environment" class that I was taking back then and there was a whole section on over population and how it was (and still is!) causing or majorly contributing to a load of the world's problems. Excuse the length of the following. It's from a blog I posted citing stuff that was in that book:

Well, here it is, folks, 2007 and we've still got our collective heads up our collective butts. Way back in December 10, 1967, the UN issued a declaration on population growth. It took up to the middle of the 1800s to reach a world population of one billion people. Less than a hundred to make it two billion and only thirty years to make it to three. At the last count we were up to over six and a half billion. The UN folks predicted nearly seven billion by the year 2000. Pretty damn close!

The declaration stated that, "This unprecedented increase presents us with a situation unique in human affairs and a problem that grows more urgent with each passing day." (Been almost forty years and that's a heap of passing days.)

It went on to say that, "Too rapid a population growth seriously hampers efforts to raise living standards, to further education, to improve health and sanitation, to provide better housing and transportation, to forward cultural and recreational opportunities, and even in some countries to assure sufficient food. In short, the human aspiration, common to men (I'd have said "people", but hey! It was 1967!) everywhere, to live a better life is being frustrated and jeopardized." Well, things have just gone on, business as usual, to the point where even the Zero Population Growth organization has changed its name to Population Connection. http://www.populationconnection.org/

The UN declaration more or less stated that most of the world`s problems and/or their solutions were either because of or extremely hampered by unchecked population growth. We've been seeing all types of shortages for decades now. Food, water, resources. They hadn't even thought about global warming but it would've been in the mix if they had figured it out back then.

Well, forty years later, and we're still poppin' them babies out like the hottest new toys at Xmas time! It's affecting us big time now but it's really going to be harder on future generations. Some legacy to leave to all of those kids. Global warming's only the tip of that iceberg.

Zap, your ability to hone in on the real issue is as good as your mead (and that's saying a LOT!).

Kinda makes you hope that we ain't munchin' on soylent green anytime soon.....huh?
