Wow, by cosmic thing, I was 9 years old 40 years ago, and it ain't hurt me yet! And I've met Arlo's kids and I can tell you it ain't hurt them either! they turned out better than ok! Bring the kid if you like and think approprite, and as Arlo says let him tell you what he thinks it means if he cares to, if not you can tell him what you think approprite.
The entire Alice's story in context, father rapers and all, may help to keep the next generation from electing another country raper to the office of president, like we got now. Go with your gut, good parents know what their kids are ready for.

Hi, when I read your first post I was going to repley with some realy heavy stuff about social contex and understanding and how it applys in both in it's first direct sense and secondaly in a metorphisical abstract sense; but reading through everyone ealse has done that already.

I suspect that if you have already bought the tickets then you do feel that they are old enough and have already taken on board when others have written on this thread and feel that you have made a blanced decition but then felt you needed to off load some of the responsibility of your decition by making your plea.

Well all I can say is what every one elase has put; Go and enyjoy sharing something with your kids. if they do take particular notice of any one phrase in Alices or any song then answer how you see fit, but remind your self that it is beeter that they are noticing this stuff with you and asking you rarther than having it forced onto them via news, papers, tv, or older kids; where things are oftern show in a distorted light.


Wow, I still got kind of heavy. Its been a hard few weeks and I am now drinking a nice cold organic real ale so I'm sure I'll start sounding less like a sociology lectuer quite soon. Well, my 9 year old grandson loves Arlo's music. None of the lyrics have hurt him any. Hope you won't worry too much dja, Arlo would never lead any one down a dark path. He's one of the good guys.

I have been listening to Arlo's music since the age of eight and at the time was able to follow lyrics like "The Motorcycle Song", "Walking Down the Line", "Hard Times", "City Of New Orleans", and his instrumentals from the Alice's Restaurant Soundtrack to games such as Hot Potato in school:lol: .......He's harmless and magical like Harry Potter

I think dja has brought up a good point that does need to be addressed. I agree with the majority of you all, in that I also think it would be best to bring the child and that he will understand what he is familiar with while the rest just goes over his head. Then use the opportunity to carefully discuss things that arise out of any questions he might generate.

There is a lot more explicit content on prime time TV these days than in Alice's Restaurant. I'm thinking of The Simpsons for just one example. It's animated format is particularly attractive to children. When I taught RSP (grades 1-5) almost all of my students watched that show on a regular basis. Personally, I used to watch it and enjoy it myself, until it became a little too crude for me. So, now I don't.

It's certainly terrific that you are a responsible and concerned parent! There aren't enough of those these days.
