My daughter passes her New Scientist magazines on to me and in the 23rd Feb edition there is a set of articles called The Music Enigma. Very interesting reading. There is one article called 'They just don't get it' It is about how people use to be called tone deaf or tin eared. Now they say there is a neurological condition called congenital amusia, which robs people of what is normally an instinctive and spontaneous appreciation of music. It is being reserched and you can take part or take the test just for fun.
I got 26 outta 30 for part one and 27 outta 30 for part two so there is hope fpr me yet! I may take some piano lessons after all!

I got 30 out of 30 on both...and an invitation to take more tests!!

I took the test and it was fun. I only got 25/30 on the first test and 26/30 on the second one. That's boringly average. They asked me to take the test over to see if I consistently get the same score of if it changes. In the first test it seemed they were mostly testing for ability to detect the wrong note, and the second one seemed more about skipped notes or notes that were held longer the second time you heard the song. I have to take it again, now, because I can't stand to see myself as only average even though I am, only average. But I want to be better than average in my dreams. I bet I'm shorter than average for the amount I weigh compared to other 4' 10" women! So there ya go! Thank God my husband who married me when I was 86lbs, says he still thinks I'm "purdy".

Interesting little test I got 27 out of 30 both times I took it.
I guess that is pretty good for a bagpiper & diesel operating mechanic who stood infront of too many sirens and airhorns.

About the only sounds that I've are really hard time with come from small bipedal creatures called toddlers and young children. Lord give me fingernails on a chalk board any day.

Yeah, it's kind of hard on your ears when you've got one that can go supersonic with their shrieks!! Some toddlers know it drives adults nuts, and I swear, they scream like that on purpose just to that to punish our ears!!

My excuse for my average score is I went to too many rock concerts in my younger days. Sue put me to shame.

And yeh, they do it on purpose. When they first start at about 10 months it's because they just figured out that they could and think it's very fun to hear themselves. Shortly after, however, they do it because it makes all the grown ups respond in someway or the dogs in the nearest 5 back yards bark like crazy. There are some toddlers next door that give my dogs fits for hours.

My mom never let me do that and I never let my kids do that. High pitched screams were reserved for "My hair is on fire", otherwise you got in trouble. Now my kids are in their 20's and remark when other parents let their crumb crunchers scream in public, "I would have gotten in trouble for that." They think all moms should follow their rules.

Once when my oldest child was somewhere between 2 and 3 years old, (which is old enough to understand words like "stop that!") I was taking my great grandma for our weekly grocery shopping trip. My kid let out one of those screams and I popped her on the mouth. Not very hard but enough to make it clear that was not to be tolerated. Boy howdy did I get in trouble from my little great grandma which ended in, "I better not ever see you do that again!"

I was on a flight from Paris to San Fransisco. There was this child I estimate was about 2 years old and who was from somewhere like India who was having the time of his life. He had figured out that when he made that sound his parents would do anything he wanted to make him stop. Fortunately, I was on enough Xanax to not care much. (I don't like to fly the older I get. What the hell is up with that? When I was young I had no problem.)

Currently I've no reason to take commerial aviation anywhere, which is a positive in my book. Still when near aircraft, motorcycles, chainsaws or small children; earplugs are my friends.
