There is a bill in the Senate to allow the great lakes to be drained of water to off set the draught in the south.

I hate to say good bye to such a wonder... but when you've got butt heads running things there's not much hope.

Michigan has a democrat for governor and she has agreed to this. I can not express in words how angry I am about this.

I don't know kj. It all died out for a little while, but someone -- somewhere -- revived it and moved it on up the government line. Is there a plug to pull for the U.S. senate?

Rumor has it that they guy that breaks ties in the senate has a buttplug, but I don't think that counts.

They got a little Dutch boy up there at a damn at Lake Superior with his finger in a hole. All they gotta do is fire that kid, and it's all over.

Makes one wonder if they got oil under them lakes.....huh?

Cheryl, this has been an issue for a long time from what I could find out in my searches. It doesn't look like they were 'draining' the lakes completely but even diverting some water to areas outside the surrounding states' basins is being hotly contested and all involved states are signing a compact to help keep the water in the Great Lakes area. Michigan has been in a drought for a few years and the water in the lakes is down. The idea of "diverting some water" does not make me feel better. The FOOLS wanting to "divert some water" will not be happy until they have drained every last drop of the water from these fresh water seas and we are left with only a memory.

I think (hope) the states' compacts and the action of the citizens in affected areas can work to preserve the lakes.

I lived in So. California most of my life. Los Angeles would not be so populated and so green if it weren't for the theft/diversion of water from the Owens Valley up north down to the Los Angeles area by Mulholland.

Hey, Cheryl, when you are up at the Dungrass Festival (!) you can look out over the great expanse of clean water and ponder this question ...is perhaps the Gov onto something, she is sharing some of this long cool drink to thirsty land, and bailing us out at the same time?

Just cuz she's a democrat, does not automatically make her correct. She could bail us out by renting out some of the cottages the state confiscated for park land. There's a whole bunch of them.

I think they oughta look at CA for an example of what happens...they diverted water from a lake basin in No. CA for So. CA water, and the whole area pretty much dried up and became a wasteland. It's a hugely bad idea. For every action, there's a reaction, and all that stuff.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm worried about.

What kind of sense does it make to bring water to a draught area without changing the conditions. The water would be gone too in a while. By conditions I mean stop the misuse of nature and start building it up again. What do they do e.g. in Africa. How was Israel built up. They made a country out of actually nothing which now exports fruits. There are ways to help the draught areas and enough engineers know how to do it. They can drill to the middle of the earth for some oil, but not for water? Sorry to rant, but this whole idea just makes me mad. Like Sue said, nature is a pretty well balanced thing as long as humans put their hands not too deep in it.

I think it would be better if we/they thought in terms of a more permanent solution. I can't imagine what that might be, but some creative someone out there must have a good workable idea.
